For months now, Ben Affleck has been silent on the stand along Batman movie from Warner Bros. In some instances the actor has said he wouldn’t direct the movie if the script wasn’t right or ready. Late yesterday, Affleck, who is still set to play Batman on the big screen, announced he will not direct the movie.
Affleck released a statement regarding his departure as director:
“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”
First thought for many might be that Affleck is stepping down due to the horrible performance of Live by Night at the box office, but sources told Variety that was not the case.
With Affleck out of the picture, who will be tasked with bringing the film to life? Depending on the nature of the story, I could see Fast and Furious director James Wan or even Joseph Kahn, who directed the Power/Rangers unauthorized bootleg a few years ago. One thing we do know, Kevin Smith won’t be taking on the Batman.
I’m flattered. But 3 things make me directing Batman impossible: 1) Haven’t spoken to Ben in years. 2) I made @YogaHosers, 3) Common sense. https://t.co/oTIhA3FtjO
