IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
ATOMIC ROBO AND THE TEMPLE OF OD #1
Writer: Brian Clevinger
Artist: Scott Wegener
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The year is 1938 and a viral weapon is being developed that will rival even Tesla’s lightning weapon designs! Cue Atomic Robo, Jack Tarot, secret government agencies, moon men, magical arctic circle elves, jetlagged aliens, elderly rights activists, youngling laborers, and the manifestation of human hope to help save the day!
ROB: Hey, a new Robo story! And I thought I was going to struggle to find things to read. Always a good read and great look. Can’t be disappointed here.
STEPHEN: If there is only one comic you can buy this week, it should be Atomic Robo and the Temple of Od #1. It is so very hard to beat and Atomic Robo adventure!
BLUE BEETLE REBIRTH #1
Writer: Keith Giffen
Artist: Scott Kolins
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Lost in the desert with no memory of the past few years, teenager Jaime Reyes must find his way home again-but when he reaches his town, he’s shocked to find it abandoned and in the hands of government officials…officials who are very interested in the Blue Beetle and the scarab that gives him his power! How can Jaime find his family and uncover the secret behind the town’s seizure-and why Kord Industries is helping keep the world from learning the truth?
MATTHEW: I kind of love this concept and can’t help but read the “trapped in the desert for five years” part as meta-commentary, but I’m looking forward to seeing Blue Beetle on the stands yet again…
ROB: JAIME AND TED! This has been a long time coming, the return of Ted Kord! Or at least I hope that’s what this entails. Either way, Jaime’s a great character and I can’t argue against Giffen.
STEPHEN: I’ve read the first issue, and the solicitation above is not what is in the book. Still, Ted Kord and Jaime Reyes as the Blue Beetles is definitely a comic to buy and read this week.
WAYNE: I’ve always enjoyed the Blue Beetle, regardless of who’s using the identity. I’m looking forward to this mashing together of several of them, and I love Mr. Kolins’ art, so I’m in!
DETECTIVE COMICS #939
Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Eddy Barrows
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “Rise of the Batmen” part six! The full scope of the Colony’s plans, and their mysterious leader, have all been revealed…so what’s it going to take to stop them? Believe us, you are not prepared for the last scene!
JON: Detective Comics is being referred to by many as one of the best titles to come out of Rebirth and I certainly agree that the first arc has been exceptional so far. James Tynion IV has been outstanding on every issue and I’m thrilled to see Eddy Barrows return on art. If you aren’t already picking up this title, I highly recommend you grab this and seek out the previous 5 issues as well.
WAYNE: I’m really enjoying this bi-weekly, so I highly recommend it!
FLASH #5
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Carmine Di Giandomenico
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “Lightning Strikes Twice” part five! With Central City now protected by dozens of freshly trained Flashes, Barry Allen takes time out to explore a new relationship. Meanwhile, a serial killer targets citizen speedsters as Wally West takes his first steps toward becoming the new Kid Flash…
WAYNE: I haven’t been this engaged in the Flash for some time, so I’m really liking what’s happening here! Great title!
HELLBLAZER #1
Writer: Simon Oliver
Artist: Moritat
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “The Poison Truth” part one! London may have recovered from Constantine’s return, but he hasn’t. Mercury hasn’t forgiven him, but she won’t leave him alone, and Swamp Thing is calling in a favor. And all the while, bigger things are brewing…
JON: Prior to the last month’s Hellblazer Rebirth #1, my only experience with John Constantine was the god-awful Keanu Reeves movie and a cameo on the CW’s ‘Arrow’. However, I genuinely enjoyed the one-shot and figured it’s about time I give this character a proper chance to see if he’s worthy of joining my regular pull list.
MATTHEW: I haven’t missed a Hellblazer #1 since 1988, and I’m not starting now.
ROM #2
Writer: Chris Ryall, Christos Gage
Artist: David Messina
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “Earthfall,” part 2. ROM is under attack by an entire town full of Dire Wraiths… but these Wraiths are far more powerful than any he’s ever faced before. How? Why? The answers await in this issue… if you dare!
• ROM faces off against some disturbingly familiar Dire Wraiths!
• Leads directly into next month’s REVOLUTION!
• The seeds of REVOLUTION are planted here!
MATTHEW: Issue #1 was a good comic, and I’m still invested in finding out how an eight-foot-tall spaceknight will interact with the world circa 2016. Paranoia, frap guns and evil aliens from beyond the pale? I’m in.
TMNT ONGOING #61
Writer: Tom Waltz, Kevin Eastman
Artist: Dave Wachter
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “Chasing Phantoms” Part 1! While the Turtles and Splinter are still reeling from the events of TMNT #60, they come under attack by the Street Phantoms! Will Splinter let this challenge to his rule stand?
ROB: I’ll never not recommend Turtles at this point. This series still continues to be my favorite ongoing as we meld Turtle lore old and new into great new stories.
TITANS #2
Writer: Dan Abnett
Artist: Bret Booth
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “The Return of Wally West” continues in TITANS #2! When Abra Kadabra conjures up doppelgängers of the Titans to wreak havoc on Keystone City, the team must face their greatest enemy yet-themselves!
JON: Between the Rebirth issue and issue #1, I’ve had a lot of fun reading Titans. Dan Abnett is doing a great job at re-acclimating Wally West to the DCU and the art has been pretty solid. I think this issue is definitely worth a read.
