As one who loves Super Sentai and Power Rangers, my last 24 hours have been chock-full of people wondering how I feel about the movie Power Ranger uniforms. (Answer: They’re okay, if heavily derivative.) It is a little awkward to answer those questions, though, as I often hear “I thought you loved Power Rangers/Legion/New Zoo Review!” in response, as though being a fan means one cannot also be a critic. Indeed, it reminds me of the days when well-meaning relatives would buy me comics as gifts, inevitably getting me things I loathe, leading to today’s emblematic query…
The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) is sad that no one ever asks about his deep love of ‘Saturday Night Live’, asking: Which pop-culture thing would your hypothetical aunt only know as That Thing You Love?

Pretty much any of the Japanese superhero shows (Ultraman, Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, etc.) and superheroes in general. For example, my grandmother can’t grasp that I don’t really care for the live-action Green Lantern movie when I’m otherwise a big fan of Green Lantern and have several t-shirts, the rings and other items.
Same with Star Wars. A lot of people can’t grasp that while I love Star Wars, there are character figures, books and especially games I really don’t want. My best friend’s mom actually choked on her drink when I said I don’t like “The Old Republic” game that my friend plays all the time. It isn’t a bad game, I just don’t enjoy it myself. She actually checked to see if I had a fever because she couldn’t fathom that there was something Star Wars related that I didn’t like.
Probably role-playing games. they are way too abstract to anyone not playing or being familiar with the concept to understand and if they think they do, its probably way off.
Kinda like how people think those of us that play must be jobless, live in our parents basement, not have a grasp on reality or don’t have girlfriends/boyfriends/husbands/wives/etc.
I WAS going to add that they think we all wear ridiculous costumes, but I’m actually guilty of doing that. I spent a lot of money on that cloak for Halloween, I wanted to wear it more than once a year!
I’m pretty sure mine is Halo. Combat evolved was the first game I ever played and I went to tournaments and such when I was a bit younger.
