IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
A-FORCE #1
Writer: G. Willow Wilson
Artist: Jorge Molina
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A-FORCE, ASSEMBLE! From the ashes of Battleworld, Marvel’s newest hero SINGULARITY has risen and entered the Marvel Universe. But she didn’t make the journey alone. To combat the most fearsome threats from across the multiverse, Singularity will summon the world’s mightiest team of Avengers to her side: SHE-HULK. CAPTAIN MARVEL. DAZZLER. MEDUSA. NICO MINORU. Together, they are A FORCE to be reckoned with!
ROB: Woo! Woman Power! The Secret Wars tie-in ended up being one of the better ones, and I’m looking forward to seeing them in the regular reality.
ARCHIE #5
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Veronica Fish
Publisher: Archie Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The biggest comic series of the year presses on! Betty and Jughead have declared war on Veronica over the heart and soul of Archie Andrews! Who should you be rooting for? You might just be surprised by the answer! Rising star comics artist Veronica Fish (Pirates of Mars, the RIVERDALE CW promo image) joins the legendary Mark Waid on creative duties for this brand new issue!
STEPHEN: Reggie is the worst! Fortunately, with Mark Waid writing, and Veronica Fish on art, this issue is another fantastic installment of the rebooted series. When Betty and Jughead team with Reggie, you know things are going to get uncomfortable – especially when a major revelation is made at the end of the issue.
FADE OUT #12
Writer: Ed Brubaker
Artist: Sean Phillips
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: SERIES CONCLUSION. It all ends here! The dramatic wrap-up to the mystery and to Brubaker and Phillips best-selling and most ambitious project yet!
CHRIS: Fade Out is ending and boy is it bittersweet. This one has been a hit since the beginning and Brubaker and Phillips have been telling a wonderfully tragic noir tale set in 1940’s Hollywood. This issue looks to give readers the answers to all our questions, but do we really want them? Great stuff.
STEPHEN: The ending to this series is right in line with everything one would expect from a noir tale. If you are familiar with Brubaker and Phillips’ work, you know that tragedy is the name of the game, and this one punches square in the kisser. If you aren’t buying the single issue today (shame on you), then you definitely should get the complete collected edition when arrives.
INVADER ZIM #6
Writer: K.C. Green
Artist: K.C. Green
Publisher: Oni Press
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Special one-shot issue written and drawn by KC Green (Gunshow, Graveyard Quest)! Three short tales answer the most-asked questions about everyone’s favorite Irken Invader. Like, where can someone like ZIM get a bank loan? What’s the most sought-after, limited-time-only treat in the galaxy? And how long can ZIM spend looking for a lost shoe before the universe implodes?
CHRIS: During my recent baby sabbatical I had a chance to go back and rewatch some old Zim episodes and it proved just how well this comic has nailed the tone of the show. Looking back it’s clear the show never stood a chance on Nickelodeon, but thanks to comics we can continue to get great Zim and Gir action! Even if you haven’t seen the show, this is a great book for the oddball in everyone.
LETTER 44 #22
Writer: Charles Soule
Artist: Alberto Alburquerque
Publisher: Oni Press
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Major Gabriel Drum has arrived on Earth, emerging from the very asteroid he was left on over a year ago and looking noticably… different. Determined to speak with the President, he’ll let nothing stand in his way, and it looks like Blades’ only option is to hear Drum out. The crew of the Clarke are unaware of Drum’s existence, however, and are instead dealing with the consequences of going against the Builders’ wishes. With Gomez gone, none of the crew is safe from the Builders’ wrath.
WAYNE: Hoping that this series will make it to TV soon, but until then, I’m loving this quirky, surprising comic. It’s one of the best books coming out today, so I highly recommend it!
PAPER GIRLS #4
Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
Artist: Cliff Chang
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: What lurks beneath the streets of Stony Stream?
CHRIS: Brian K. Vaughan is one of the few writers that can take a concept like girls delivering newspapers in the eighties and morph it to include everything from aliens to time travel. I still haven’t fully comprehended what is happening with this series but I do know that it’s fun on every level.
POWER CUBED #4 of 4
Writer/Artist: Aaron Lopresti
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Dr. Cruel is forcing Kenny to use his cube’s near-limitless power in a bizarre plan for world domination and . . . love? But Kenny is through with letting other people run his life. With his robot friends at his side and a secret agent at his back, Kenny’s finally ready to take control!
WAYNE: I’ve really enjoyed this fun miniseries! It’s been really worth my hard-earned shekels, and I hope there’s more Power Cubed in our future! This conclusion is a great one, so be sure not to miss it!
REPLICA #2
Writer: Paul Jenkins
Artist: Andy Clarke
Publisher: AfterShock Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Number Two! In which Detective Trevor Churchill of the Terran Corporation discovers the only person more annoying than his alien partner is a clone of himself. In which we visit with Number Two, Trevor’s overworked and under-appreciated right-hand man. And in which Number Two gets lucky while drowning in a sea of bad luck. Meanwhile, a murder investigation hits a snag when the detectives in charge turn out to be as brain dead as the victim! Written by Eisner-award winning author Paul Jenkins (Wolverine: Origin, The Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man) and art superstar Andy Clarke (Batman, Judge Dredd), this monthly series promises to be fun, daring, adventurous and most times, quite offensive.
WAYNE: I truly loved the first issue of this title, and can’t wait for this one to be in my hands to read! But then, AfterShock Comics is off to a terrific start, in my opinion, so I highly recommend them all! Don’t miss it!
ROCKET RACCOON AND GROOT #1
Writer: Skottie Young
Artist: Filipe Andrade
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: There’s a new criminal mastermind in the galaxy, and it’s…ROCKET RACCOON?! How did this happen? SERIOUSLY, HOW DID THIS HAPPEN, YOU GUYS??? Groot knows, but he’s not talking! Well, he is talking, but all he’s saying is…oh, you know. Diabolical danger, madcap mysteries and astonishing adventure abound as SKOTTIE YOUNG and FILIPE ANDRADE return to tell tall tail tales of Rocket Raccoon, now with the adorable, arboreal Groot along for the ride! If you love adventure, animals, outer space and just about anything in between, this is the book for you!
ROB: Skottie Young’s first work with Rocket was great. Looking forward to where he takes the duo on this adventure.
STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY #2
Writers: Mike Johnson and Ryan Parrott
Artist: Derek Charm
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Don’t miss the latest chapter of the blockbuster mini-series that introduces a brave new cast of cadets to Star Trek lore! What is the mystery at the heart of Starfleet that connects this new crew to Kirk, Spock and rest of the iconic cast? The answers are inside, in this all-new adventure set in the new film universe!
STEPHEN: I was split on the first issue, but I do like the expanded stories that come from Star Trek, so I’m checking this one out to see if it holds up. With a new Star Trek movie headed our way this year, Starfleet Academy will be a series to keep an eye on.
TOTALLY AWESOME HULK #2
Writer: Greg Pak
Artist: Frank Cho
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: CHO TIME CONTINUES AS THE HULK TAKES ON THE BIGGEST MONSTERS IN THE MARVEL UNIVERSE! • But can Amadeus handle the brand-new danger of Lady Hellbender? • Also: Trouble in the family! Snack time with Spidey! And more revelations about just what the devil happened to Banner!
ROB: Cho as the new Hulk is interesting. Pak has a character he created and it works. Now this issue should flesh out more of the support and the mission.
ROBOT OVERLORD: I WILL ADMIT, THESE ARE SOME GREAT BOOKS! WHAT WILL YOU BE BUYING THIS WEEK? USE THE COMMENT SECTION BELOW!
