IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD

The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.

    astrocity28ASTRO CITY #29
    Writer: Kurt Busiek
    Artist: Brent Anderson
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
An ordinary suburban family deals with an alien invasion of their world by powerful monsters from outer space—only this family lives on Zirros, throneworld of the Zirr Empire, and the invaders are those violent superhumans, the First Family. Bullets won’t stop them. The army can’t stop them. Who can stop “The Menace from Earth”?

RODRIGO: New Astro City’s out, everyone put down what you’re reading and pay attention.

    black knightBLACK KNIGHT #1
    Writer: Frank Tieri
    Artist: Luca Pizzari
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: What do you do when it’s your destiny to be damned? For centuries, that is the question that has plagued each wielder of the Ebony Blade… with all of them eventually meeting untimely ends due to the sword’s curse. And it is the question the current Black Knight, Dane Whitman, must ask himself as his addiction to the blade grows ever stronger and he finds himself in the aptly named Weirdworld. What are the circumstances that brought him to leave Earth and enter this strange and dangerous realm? And what do the Uncanny Avengers have to do with it? Find out here in this new ongoing tale of sword, sorcery and one man’s struggle to not lose his soul.

MATTHEW: One of the few Avengers to not have his own solo series, Dane Whitman has long been a favorite of mine. (It’s that eagle crest.) Given how strong Marvel’s other post-Secret Wars content has been, I’m hoping that this one puts Dane on the top of the metaphorical superhero card…

WAYNE: I have been a big fan of Dane Whitman ever since he took on the mantle of the Black Knight decades ago! (Yes, I’m that old!) I haven’t always liked how Marvel has portrayed him (cough! cough! Black Panther comic! cough! cough!), but I’m really looking forward to this new title! Cannot wait!

    cleanroom2CLEAN ROOM #2
    Writer: Gail Simone
    Artist: Jon Davis-Hunt, Jenny Frison
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: It’s a battle of wills as Chloe faces off with self-help guru Astrid in the infamous Clean Room-and what Chloe witnesses there reinforces her desire to bring Astrid and her empire down. But what Chloe doesn’t know is that the atrocities that happen in the Clean Room don’t necessarily stay there.

MATTHEW: Issue #1 was disturbing on multiple fronts, and I really want to know more about the secretive central premise. If you like a good suspense/horror book, this one is highly recommended.

    darkhorsepresents16DARK HORSE PRESENTS #16
Writer: John Layman, David Chelsea, Carla Speed McNeil, Tony Puryear, Bo Hampton, Phil Stanford, Nate Cosby, Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray, Richard Corben, Robert Tinnell, Chad Lambert
Artist: David Chelsea, Carla Speed McNeil, Tony Puryear, Bo Hampton, Sam Kieth, Richard Corben, Patric Reynolds, Evan Shaner, Tony Akins, Apri Kusbiantoro
    Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
    Cover Price: $7.99
SOLICITATION:  True-crime writer Phil Stanford tells a gritty tale from Portland’s underbelly as he kicks off City of Roses with artist Patric Reynolds—a new era for the Crime Does Not Pay name!

RODRIGO: Dark Horse Presents is a great showcase of talent, both for complete comics and for individual creators. Strongly recommend.

    EARTH2SOC_Cv6_55ca79792029b9.40132715EARTH 2 SOCIETY #6
    Writer: Daniel H. Wilson
    Artist: Allison Borges
    Publisher: DC Comics
    Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: The heroes of Earth-2 grow closer to discovering the real dangers that lurk in their new world as the murderous Hourman is revealed.

ROB: A lot of literal and figurative world-building has been going on in the new Earth-2 title, and it’s all been quite interesting so far. The book not tethering itself to any former continuity has really helped as well.

    extraordinaryxmen2EXTRAORDINARY X-MEN #2
    Writer: Jeff Lemire
    Artist: Humberto Ramos
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The fate of mutantkind is decided here! Staring down the threat of extinction once more, veteran X-Man Storm pulls together the team she’ll need to ensure her race’s survival. Together, these EXTRAORDINARY X-MEN will struggle with the familiar burden of being hated and feared, while facing threats the likes of which they’ve never seen. Here’s hoping they survive the experience!

ROB: This is a team of X-Men I’m rather interested in, especially with what they had been in the last couple years. Also, OLD MAN LOGAN!

    HuckCoverHUCK #1
    Writer: Mark Millar
    Artist: Rafael Albuquerque
    Cover Price: $3.50
    Publisher: Image Comics
SOLICITATION: In a quiet seaside town, Huck uses his special gifts to do a good deed each day. His neighbors return the favors by keeping his abilities a secret. But when a newcomer alerts the media, a firestorm erupts, sending Huck on an adventure that will change everything. This brand-new series from writer MARK MILLAR and artist RAFAEL ALBUQUERQUE presents a comicbook unlike anything you’ve read before. Featuring a Feel-Good Movie variant cover by RAFAEL ALBUQURQUE.

STEPHEN: This is a fantastic first chapter in a story that could turn into a work of horror, a work of insanity, or it could be a book that lifts readers to a whole new level. What would happen if The Man of Steel wasn’t about death and destruction? Read Huck #1 and find out. This is THE book you should read this week.

    mightythor1MIGHTY THOR #1
    Writer: Jason Aaron
    Artist: Russell Dauterman
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: When DR. JANE FOSTER lifts the mystic hammer Mjolnir, she is transformed into the Goddess of Thunder, THE MIGHTY THOR! Her enemies are many, as Asgard descends further into chaos and war threatens to spread throughout the Ten Realms. Yet her greatest battle will be against a far more personal foe: the cancer that is killing her mortal form.

MATTHEW: Seems like forever since the reveal that Jane Foster is the new Thor, but I’m still really interested in seeing how her story plays out. Add in excellent art, and you’ve got a first-round draft pick comic for sure…

ROB: She’s back! Jane Foster picking up Mjolnir has been one of the best things Marvel has done for the God of Thunder in years, and now that Secret Wars is over, she can come back!

    PC3coverPOWER CUBED #3 of 4
    Writer/Artist: Aaron Lopresti

Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: With his house leveled and his dad abducted, Kenny retreats to the wilderness, along with his matter-transforming cube and his new robot friends, Click and the Power Blaster. But when Dr. Cruel captures his girlfriend, Kenny can’t keep hiding . . . He’ll have to summon the courage and ingenuity he’s not sure he has to save her from the mad scientist’s machinations!

WAYNE: What a fun comic adventure this comic is! I hope you’re enjoying it as well! It’s a terrific book that reminds me of the wonderful Silver Age! Great miniseries, highly recommended!

    therook2THE ROOK #2
    Writer: Steven Grant
    Artist: Paul Gulacy
    Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
    Cover Price: 3.99
    SOLICITATION: He’s back!

    H. G. Wells’s The Time Machine never seemed so real to Restin Dane—especially since he’s living the experience! Thrust into a real-life science-fiction epic, Dane is forced to defend the gentle Eloi from the fearsome Morlocks in a battle for dominance!

RODRIGO: I’m still making up my mind about the Rook, maybe issue 2 will settle some stuff for me.

    STGL5coverSTAR TREK/GREEN LANTERN #5 of 6
    Writer: Mike Johnson
    Artist: Angel Hernandez
    Cover Artist: David Williams
    Publisher: IDW Publishing
    Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The galactic civil war reaches a critical point as the Yellow Lantern Klingons, Orange Lantern Romulans, and Red Lantern Gorn fight for supremacy, with Hal Jordan, James T. Kirk, and the crew of the Enterprise caught in the middle! It’s a dark night for the Federation… and the arrival of Nekron and his Black Lanterns will only make things worse! Don’t miss the penultimate chapter in the blockbuster crossover event of 2015!

WAYNE: I have been truly enjoying this comic! I’d love to see Star Trek/Green Lantern II! What do you say, IDW? More! More! More!
