During the early days of digital comics, Dark Horse Comics made the decision to release everything through its own app. Yesterday, the publisher announced it would release all of its single issues on everything from comiXology to Google Play, to the Nook, and more.
“We’re very pleased to offer our line of single-issue comics digitally to fans across the world,” said Dark Horse president and publisher Mike Richardson. “Dark Horse Digital has been at the forefront of the digital-comics movement through our own app-development team as well as our digital storefront, but now our growing relationship with our digital-publishing partners expands the choices for our readers to choose the platform and format they like best.”
In June Dark Horse added graphic novels to the comiXology store, and according to the publisher, the sales were “incredible.” Yesterday’s news is even bigger as those who only use comiXology will have access to every single issue, on the day of release. No more waiting (or using another app) to read Hellboy, Buffy, or the new Tomb Raider series.
“This is huge,” said comiXology co-founder and CEO David Steinberger in a press release from ComiXology. “Our fans were thrilled when we added Dark Horse Comics on comiXology earlier this year. I’m very excited that we’re now able to offer new releases the same-day-as-print and the incredible Dark Horse Comics catalog of back issues to readers through both comiXology and Amazon’s Kindle Store.”
This week sees the release of the new single issue sales, and those browsing the comiXology store will see a plethora of Dark Horse comics waiting for purchase. I don’t know what the sales for single issues were through the Dark Horse Comics app, but expanding the company’s offerings to other digital outlets seems likes the smartest move. It certainly makes reading Dark Horse Comics more convenient for me.
Now if only Amazon and Apple could settle their dispute, we could get through apps sales back in the iPad ComiXology App.
