I think you guys sold short the British condescension of the Japanese. “We will show these yellow fools how the British do it” seemed like a significant motivator. I also think Nicholson’s notion that discipline was the only way to save the lives of his men was not really touched on at great length in your commentary. There is a sense in which he was right. The men were in much better shape when discipline was in place. Of course, he also was blind to anything an inch beyond his nose.

Absolutely agree about the discipline. It also mattered that the discipline was coming from a person that the British soldiers respected and not from Saito.
