Zach on Film: Planet of the Apes (1968)

    Stephen SchleicherBy Stephen SchleicherSeptember 13, 2013Updated:December 31, 20139 Comments2 Mins Read

A podcast where apes evolved from men? Zach sits down to examine and reflect on 1968’s Planet of the Apes this week on Zach on Film.

    PLANET OF THE APES
The film tells the story of an astronaut crew who crash-land on a strange planet in the distant future. Although the planet appears desolate at first, the surviving crew members stumble upon a society in which apes have evolved into creatures with human-like intelligence and speech. The apes have assumed the role of the dominant species and humans are mute creatures wearing animal skins.

Zach definitely gets a banana this week, and not JUST a banana but a banana peeled from the correct end!

I was surprised that Stephen didn’t mention one aspect of the Apes films that had a broad and lasting impact in the industry.

Planet of the Apes is in many respects the first modern ‘franchise’ movie series. The movie spawned 3 sequels of varying quality from awesome (Escape from the Planet of the Apes) to cringeworthy (Battle for the Planet of the Apes), a Television spinoff series, and a Saturday morning cartoon that were a cash cow for 20th Century Fox. The movie/property was successfully merchandised to the moon, and the mountains of toys, comics, lunchboxes, costumes, masks and other Apey goo-gaws almost certainly influenced George Lucas’ brilliant and (highly profitable) decision to retain the merchandising rights to Star Wars. This effort proved that merchandise can be more lucrative than ticket sales, and no tent-pole movie comes out today without a bunch of junk featuring the logo and characters.

Important question: Which end do you believe is the correct end?

        • Bruce on September 13, 2013 1:44 pm

          The end opposite the stem.

            Glad that we can agree.

Here, here on the correct end of the banana to peel. That way you have a handle

This was great. My 13 year old daughter was listening to it with me in the car while we were running around, we talked about it quite a bit and decided to watch it when we got home. Found it on Netflix and she ended up really liking it. The best part was her recognition of all of the parodies and memes that have come from it that she has seen in various media. It was great to open her eyes to some of the classic stuff I grew up with!

        Love to hear that!

Just finished watching the movie and the podcast. Loved them both, but I was surprised that no one mentioned the audio. It could be the copy I have, or the fact that I watched the movie with headphones on (sadly not tweaked) but I found some issues with the sound effects.

I am not sure now if I just imagined them or they were real but in the beginning when the guys were walking thru the desert their footsteps did not sound real at all, and there were a few times that I could picture the actors laying down the actually dialogue in a studio. I wonder if some of the audio was added or at least re-touched post production? Towards the end of the movie when Taylor was yelling to Cornelius across the canyon the echo sounded very “manufactured” not quite the right word but you get what I am saying.

Again all this could very well be in my head, or most specifically my ears, but I wonder what your all thought?

      • Craig Borden on September 14, 2013 10:52 pm

I should point out that I know, the sound effects were added after but I guess what I am trying to say is compared to current standards I found some effects stood out too much to me.
