Prequel trilogy editing goes back to at least 200o-2001 when ‘The Phantom Edit’ was circulating. It removed and reordered some things from Phantom Menace to make a supposedly stronger film:

There is also something referred to as Machete Order, a viewing order which throws out Phantom Menace altogether, then suggests watching them in this order:
New Hope
Empire Strikes Back
Attack of the Clones
Revenge of the Sith
Return of the Jedi
This order allegedly maintains most of the surprises in the story. Vader as Luke’s father, the revelation of Leia as Luke’s sister (revealed at the end of Sith as opposed to Jedi, but not revealed before any of the original trilogy is seen as would happen if you view them in episode numbered order) Senator Palpatine becoming the emperor, etc. The two prequel films then serves as a story-within-a-story that for the most part doesn’t undermine too much of the continuity established in the original trilogy. I’d like to try this to see if it enhances the prequels as advocates of Machete Order suggest.
The creator of Machete Order:

I had literally just seen the video of “what if the phantom menace was good” the day before I heard this podcast & was contemplating sending it to you guys. That guy had amazing ideas & his alternate vision for the story floored me. I didn’t hate the prequels, but there was definitely room for improvement & he hits the nail on the head in a number of places.
Also, Stephen how have you managed to keep the boy from learning that Anakin is Darth Vader? You totally need to be recording the moment that he figures that one out.
