Press Release
There are many titles coming out this summer to be excited for. From DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 to BEFORE WATCHMEN to HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, DC Entertainment is publishing a wide variety of the most anticipated releases in the comic book medium. Today, we are pleased to add another new title to that roster: PHANTOM LADY.
Written by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti and illustrated by Cat Staggs and Rich Perotta, PHANTOM LADY will star the female Freedom Fighter in the debut of her own 4-part miniseries. And joining her will be her partner-in-crimefighting, the diminutive dynamo known as Doll Man.
“Phantom Lady and Doll Man is an exciting return to the roots of the characters as pulpy, street level crime fighters with a few new twists and some heavy sci-fi overtones,” Justin Gray told THE SOURCE. “We took the best of their original core concepts and updated them with no relation to our previous work on Phantom Lady and Doll Man in the Freedom Fighters. You’re getting in on the ground floor of the origin story of two people whose lives intersect and a common threat that transforms them into pretty amazing and engaging superheroes.”
“We are super excited to reconnect with characters we have been so close with over the years, and getting to create something both exciting and visually cool in the process,” continued Jimmy Palmiotti. “With this series, we dig into who Phantom Lady and Doll Man are, how they came to be and how they fit into DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. There is something for everyone here and we are having a blast!”
“I have to say I am really enjoying what Jimmy and Justin have created,” said Cat Staggs. “It is a wonderful take on a classic character. The story itself leans towards a gritty crime noir, which is something I am a huge fan of. Getting to draw this on a daily basis is a dream! I can’t wait for fans to see it!”
“One of the first comic books I ever read as a child was FREEDOM FIGHTERS,” added Rich Perotta. “I am very excited to be a part of this latest project from DC Comics.”
PHANTOM LADY #1, which features the below cover by Amanda Conner, goes on sale August 29th.

Wow… This looks interesting…
Can’t wait to read this!
I’m interested in the characters but have never heard of the art team doing the interiors. I thought for a brief exiting moment that this was going to be Amanda Connor through out…
All right cool, wanna see this. Not a complaint, but why purple, I mean, if they wanted to change from the classic green and yellow (or blue and red, depending on how classic you want to get) why not change to something more phantom themed, why purple? It makes her too similar to Huntress, or Nightshade, or Night Girl, or even Catwoman (remember the Jimmy Ballant years?). They could take a more distinguishable collor.
What Power Girl lost, apparently Phantom Lady gained….
If you mean “the window,” I guess it does kind of look like that.. If you mean her being endowed like PG, I would say PL has been portrayed that way at least the last 5 years or so… (at least with the one that debuted with the new Freedom Fighters)
Phantom Lady has been portrayed as well endowed for somewhat longer than that… :)

I couldn’t remember if she ALWAYS was, so I was more comfortable saying she was with the update… ;^) I had thought she had always been, but didn’t want to misspeak with regards to the Golden Age version, which apparently was just as top heavy as the post Infinite Crisis PL… That, and like Catwoman from the ’90’s (specifically speaking about purple outfitted Catwoman.. who had essentially 2 watermelons in her outfit until the classic goggles outfit), you never know when characters get breast reductions and spontaneous implants…
It’s a natural complement to her traditional gold coloring…
But… But no Uncle Sam?
I take it you haven’t read Ray #4…..
SPOILER WARNING!!!!!
On the last page, we see a man dressed in black approach the Ray with a card reading “I want you” with an American flag design, which very well could be from Uncle Sam…. The character is probably DC’s Agent Coulson or could possibly be a bold new version of the Uncle Sam character…….. We’ll just have to wait and see when the same thing happens to PL and DM in issue 4 of this!!
Phantom Lady: Yay. Doll Man: Meh. I’d rather have the Human Bomb, or… Geez, even Black Condor. How many issues do we think this goes before he “accidentally” ends up in her cleavage? O_o For laughs, of course… Purely for comic effect. >_>…<_<…
Where’s Dollwoman?
Glad they are bringing these characters back, but like the Ray it’s unfortunate that they are dumping all the history. I assume this means new secret ID names, etc.
The Amanda Conner cover will get me to look.
