They’ve been out for a while, but Mimoco took the time out of their schedule to send us one of the new Mimobot Star Wars USB drives that look like characters from the popular franchise.
I love new package day at Major Spoilers. On the one hand it means new comic books have finally arrived, but when mysterious boxes show up as well, it can only mean new cool things to talk about.
The Star Wars Mimobots have been out for a couple of years, but Series 7 (yes, SEVEN!) of USB drives included the Boba Fett drive, with removable helmet.
While the images we’ve seen on the Mimoco website make the drives look big, they really aren’t the monstrosities that are going to take up a lot of space.
I’m not one that gets seeks out geegaws and doodads to connect to my computer. Heck, I only recently got a Doctor Who USB hub because I was in desperate need of a hub, and it happened to be the only one I could get on short notice…
Having carried this drive around for a few days, I am impressed that the small size doesn’t interfere too much with all the stuff I carry around in my bag each day. The unique design of this 2.5-inch high by 1-inch wide drive makes it easy to spot in the bottom of the bag, and the 4GB model sent to us for this review is large enough to hold nearly all the electronic documents and “things” we need to make it through the day.
BUT… because of the width it is really difficult for the drive to share space with other USB devices on a computer that has the ports too close to one another (Thanks Apple).
BOTTOM LINE: Good for Star Wars Fans
If you are looking for a storage device that doesn’t look like all the other black and grey thumbdrives gathering dust in your desk drawer, the Star Wars Mimobot USB drives are a unique way to show off your love for the franchise. And, at $27.95 the 4GB drive, Mimobot hasn’t priced themselves out of the market. It’s a little hard to give a rating to a USB drive, but it is a cool bit of ephemera, has plenty of storage space, but ultimately competes for space with other USB ports. 4 out of 5 Stars.
