Previously in Amazing Spider-Man: Dr. Octopus has put a system, the Octavian Shield, in place to change the harmful effects of global warming. Last time, he turned them way up and pointed out that with help, he can turn them way down saving the planet. Now, much of Earth’s populace is considering helping him, but our favorite wall-crawler doesn’t believe Ock and is ready to stop him.
PUNCHING AL GORE
We open with a bit of a prequel, showing the Six getting some items geared to take down specific Avengers: Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor. The small piece is to set up partially how much Ock has planned and partially as a foreshadow for the fight at the end of the book, and it does both well. The story really starts at an emergency G8 summit where world leaders and leading minds are discussing Ock’s proposition. Spidey busts in interrupting Al Gore and telling them all how insane they are for even considering to throw in with “a guy who makes Giant Robot Octopi!” When Gore tries to debate with Spidey, Spidey punches him revealing Chameleon in disguise. Here we have a good use of both characters, showing off Chameleon’s expert infiltration skills and the new tech Spidey has come up with to counter the Six’s abilities.
With part of Ock’s plan to forward the proceedings foiled, his hand is forced and he starts the Octavian Shield again, this time showing the good it could do. Of course this re-sparks the debate on top of Ock demanding the release of Chameleon so as not to turn the heat up again, of course he’s tagged with a Spider-tracer first, thus leading us to the big showdown. The fight is great, showing off how both Spidey and Ock planned for the opposing teams. Slott is also able to show just how well he can handle both individuals and teams, as every character is given a fair showing of fighting and speaking. Unfortunately, Ock came better prepared, and the issue ends with the Avengers down and Spidey forced to kneel before Ock as the issue ends.
OCK IS TERRIFYING
Ock’s new design has eight tentacle-arms coming out of a simple pod with his head being the only skin left. In certain situations, this would probably look more silly than anything else, but Caselli makes Ock down right scary. From any angle or distance, Caselli has given Ock menace, and it is impressive. The rest of the book looks great as well, as the details pop, both on characters and background pieces. I haven’t a single complaint about the way any of this look and I could happily look it over again and again all day.
BOTTOM LINE: GREAT SETUP
Ends of the Earth is gearing up to be as good as Spider-Island, of course with Slott still at the helm, I didn’t expect anything less. This issue gave us a great fight, some good character moments for both main and side characters (the JJJ vs Horizon Labs side bit is making me hate JJJ all over again) and a lead in that has me eager for the next ish. All in all, I don’t believe I could be happier with the book and I have to give it a 5 for 5.
