If you haven’t heard the big rumor, Bleeding Cool is reporting that IDW Publishing will release an officially sanctioned Doctor Who/Star Trek crossover. I’ve not seen any official Doctor Who crossovers myself, but I think we’re all familiar with Star Trek and X-Men and Legion of Super-Heroes. IDW has been no stranger to interesting crossovers – in fact, the current Infestation 2 event has The Old Ones making their way into everything from Transformers to Danger Girl.
Major Spoilers Question(s) of the Day: Are cross property events something that really work for fans of all properties involved, or do they simply fall into that category of “I’m gonna read this just to see the train wreck in progress?” AND more importantly, what unique crossover do you want to see in your comic books?

It is very rare for something like this to succeed from a story telling perspective beyond trainwreck. They usually seem like cynical cash grabs trying to maximize two separate fandoms and theoretically generating twice the sales.
Archie/Punisher worked pretty well because the concept was so silly, and it was so cleverly written. The Stormwatch/Aliens thing worked surprisingly well as the setup for the Authority (but the Aliens in that story could have easily been replaced with other monsters without much change to the tale). Outside of those two, I haven’t been that impressed with the ones I’ve read.
Doctor Who/Star Trek could work with the themes of exploration and what it means to be human, but the tone of the two is different enough, I’m just not sure it can work. That is generally the problem. X-Men/Star Trek was just ridiculous on its face, and there was just no way to believably marry the two properties in tone, story, or character design to step outside that trainwreck, fan-ficcy, territory.
I don’t think that the Star Trek/Legion of Super-Heroes crossover was a train wreck.
Hopefully, that bodes well for this endeavor.
Not a train wreck, certainly, but so far not exactly stellar story-telling.
For me, ST/LSH only works if you have strong knowledge of the core of both universes ALREADY, and they’ve done little-to-nothing to explain what’s going on, instead focusing on the character moments that are only set up for people who are already the fans…
That said, it’s pretty much the approach you have to take. You can’t encapsulate 40 years of two franchises in six issues and still have a story, and this book with probably only appeal to those who are already fans (of one franchise or the other) in some fashiion already.
I’ll probably look into it. Seems fun, at least, though they’re missing the boat not having Worf meet Leela…
I will buy it.
It depends on the property. I would buy this one. I woul dalso buy a Doctor Who/Star Wars crossover. I have laid out the whole thing in my forum post, “Why Doctor Who is Grand Moff Tarkin” (I wrote it as a parallel to Matthew’s Franklin Richards theory.) http://www.majorspoilers.com/smf/index.php/topic,2747.0.html
While I found Star Trek/X-Men comics to be unbelievably cheesy, the novel was actually not quite as bad in my opinion. Still cheesy, but in a more enjoyable way.
I don’t know what I think about The Doctor meeting the Trek cast. It would be different if they did it similar to Marvel UK loosely tying Doctor Who to the Marvel U when there were Time Lord affiliated characters (but not actually the Doctor) appearing within Captain Britain. I could buy that a little more without it feeling a bit too gimmicky. But at the same time I’m intrigued enough that I’d like to see what they come up with.
I think Dr. Who/Star Trek makes sense. They are both series with a generally optimistic view of human potential. The real problem will be creating a “monster” or plot device to make it work.
I’ll pick it up.
What are the chances it’ll sell for $2.99?
The usual pattern for these things is a Big Bad from each universe. The Master and Khan?
I just hope it’s not Cybermen/Borg hybrids or anything too obvious like that. I’d honestly rather see a less obvious team-up.
Hot damn! Two great franchises mixed together I love it. These crazy crossovers are the best. I’m in.
Warehouse 13/Indiana Jones, Stargate/Eureka, Fringe/X-Files?
No, wait, scratch all that. I want to see Leverage break into Warehouse 13
X overs: Doctor Who can crossover with many things easily Eureka, X-Filesm even Big Bang Theory (see below) could be good. For Dr Who X Prisoner here is plot suggestion. The next incarnation of Dr Who is Prisoner, starting at first Secret Agent (Danger Man). He doesn’t know he is a Time Lord. He has all of the adventures through the final Prisoner episode #17. Then the story begins as Dr Who does not recognize his companions, who are people in the Village that are trying to help him escape. #2 is The Master or some other villain, wanting information.
I’d love to see Fire Fly X Anything. Bring back Fire Fly!
Big Bang Theory X Any DC comic. Comic Book or TV Episode. It is a comedy. DC Earth Prime fits well, except I’m not sure it’s around anymore with the new 52. It could also crossover with Dr. Who easily, as long as it is one short comedy episode.
I agree MarkB. Crossovers can be lots of fun when used to challenge the creative team to stay in the spirit of both franchises.
The Seventh Doctor was responsible for Death’s Head shrinking from Transformer size to Time Lord size. I want a rematch, yes?
