Even though Smallville has concluded its run on The CW, fans apparently still want more, and DC is answering demand with Smallville Season 11.
As digital comics become more of a big deal, DC is planning on releasing Smallville Season 11 in digital formats first before being collected in print. The company also has plans to do this with Batman Beyond.
“Six months after Clark Kent donned the cape and took to the skies to save Earth from Apokolips… enter Season 11!” enthuses Miller. “New allies abound! New enemies afoot! And old friends return where they’re least expected! Pere and colorist Chris Beckett have done a fantastic job of capturing the look of the show and the players, and Gary and Cat are knocking it out of the park on covers. I couldn’t be more excited to help give seasoned viewers and new readers an all-access pass to Clark’s first year in the cape.”
Smallville Season 11 is being written by Bryan Q. Miller, one of the writers from the CW series, and is scheduled to debut on April 13, 2012, with the print edition arriving May 16, 2012.

Could this be the first comic my wife will read?
Stephen: “DIGITAL COMICS!?”
Me: Honey guess what… Smallville is back!
Wife: No freaking way!
Me: Its true and guess what they have a new twist!
Wife: What?
Me: They are experimenting with a new medium for the series. (Evil Grin)
Wife: What the hell are you talking about?
Me: It’s a comic book!
Wife: Not a TV show?
Me: No a comic book, now you can be like me!
(BlueBeetle is killed off panel.)
I’m sorry. This makes zero sense to me. Wouldn’t now be the perfect time for SMALLVILLE fans to jump into Superman comics? Or Action comics? Why create a non-canonical Superman book?
Because there are more people who watched Smallville than the number of copies sold in January of Action Comics and Superman combined?
Not really a perfect time anymore, six months after those books all relaunched. And a Smallville book doesn’t prevent any fans of the TV show from sampling other DC books. If anything it might be a gateway drug into comics for a few people. Probably very few, but it can’t hurt.
As to why created a non-canonical Superman book? Probably because Buffy’s post TV series comics were a success and DC thinks they can make some more money on the Smallville property.
Probably your second paragraph…but can you blame them?
I also noted that Tom Welling has also forgone the red pull over underwear.
Plus, there are 52 “universes” in the DCU. Why couldn’t the “Smallville” reality be one of them?
This might not be too bad. Could be better than the ongoing Superman title…. (action is good but his titular book had been boring). Plus I like the smallville lois lane (who had been somewhat back seat in the new 52).
When the second part of JMS’s “Superman: Earth One” was announced, I made the statement that I would pick it up based on the strength of the first part, but I was concerned that, with the advent of Grant Morrison’s “Action Comics” run we would now have two separate tales with different continuities telling the tale of Clark Kent shortly after the start of his career as Superman.
There was some discussion at that time, that it probably wouldn’t be that big of a deal because each story was being told in a different format and marketed to a somewhat different group of buyers.
With “Smallville: Season 11,” we now have a third title telling the tale of Clark Kent shortly after the start of his career as Superman.
As a direct-to-digital release, I guess you could also call that a “different format marketed to a somewhat different group of buyers,” but this increases my concern since we will now have three titles treading the same ground in three separate continuities.
Doesn’t three completely unconnected “Newbie Supes” titles feel like overkill to anyone else?
Um. Okay. But why?
What he said
Wait one gosh darn second! Last year we, myself included, were all pretty pissed off about how Smallville ended (if memory serves) We waited a long time to see Tom Welling in the ‘suit’ and we didn’t get it. And now they have the audacity to, kinda, give us what we wanted, but in comic form?!?
Buffy Season 8 made sense, there was more to tell. But this….this…..I….wha?
I love smallville! when i saw the final episode i was hoping that it would come back even though everyone said “no its over, theres no more” i still hoped. i told them that it could still happen. now its back, but this isnt what i hoped for. i love all the graphics, and i love knowing that i have something to look forward to on tv.
