THE MAN WHO MUST WIN
Timeless #1 takes us to the perspective of Anatoly Petrov, a scholar that studies villains. He is set to write a book about Doctor Doom who may be the greatest villain ever. That is, until Kang the Conqueror comes to his door and suggests he writes about him instead. Kang takes Anatoly to a prehistoric era where he is worshipped as a God. It is here that Anatoly realizes that Kang wants to win at any cost, and he wants the challenge. Kang cares little for anything else. Suddenly, there is a timequake and Kang goes to one of his stations to figure out what is going on. There is a rogue timeline where someone is trying to collide with the main one in a desperate plea for survival. Kang decides to deal with the timeline and leaves his base to die from invaders while he moves forward.
In this timeline, there is only one man alive, Doctor Doom. But it isn’t Victor, but rather Reed Richards who has replaced his eyes with the time and reality infinity stones to force his will in the timeline. As Kang and Reed fight, Reed gets the upper hand until Anatoly saves Kang. Anatoly is returned to his timeline and has a lot to think about and has a mysterious symbol that is imprinted on his mind.
END OF THE YEAR
I was hesitant to pick up this comic to review. I’m not interested in much of the space part of the Marvel Universe and Kang never caught my interest. But the solicitation caught my attention because it claims this issue will set up the next year of comics. But beyond a very cryptic symbol, the book didn’t foreshadow much up from what I could tell. Instead, we get a character profile of who Kang is. And I find it ironic that I have met some people who have the same personality as Kang. People who are willing to do anything to get a leg up in the world. And ironically, that made me appreciate the character a little more.
I enjoyed taking the perspective of Anatoly, a smart guy who is explaining things to the reader in a way that is easier to understand. Ultimately, a great issue from the creative team to provide some insight on a well-established villain.
BOTTOM LINE: DECENT COMIC
I’m unsure if Timeless #1 gave me what the solicitation promised. But I think it is a well-read comic that provides insight for this character. Or at least, it did for me as a reader who is unfamiliar with Kang. I’ll give this book a solid 4 out of 5.
