Because it is Friday, and because I haven’t featured Humberto Ramos in a while… Regardless of how others feel about his style, I really like it, and I really like his group shots as you can see he doesn’t just plaster the same look to each character with alterations to hair and eyes, he goes all out. This piece was for the X-Men 200th issue variant cover.

I’m totally smitten with Amanda Conner’s art. My recent review of Power Girl had me digging around looking for more of her stuff, and I stumbled across this simple Power Girl sketch she did at a convention.
I’m in the mood for a little Doctor Fate today, and my search turned up this piece by Chris Stevens. Nice use of black and white to show the power behind the hero. via Chris Stevens
One of my favorite Anime films of all time is Hayao Miyazaki’s Laputa: Castle in the Sky. I’m thinking up a theme for the week, and found this lovely piece of art by an artist who calls himself StarryJohn. For those not familiar with Laputa, the wiki has all the answers: According to legend, humans were fascinated with the sky; therefore they created increasingly sophisticated ways of lifting aircraft from the ground. This eventually led to flying cities and fortresses. Over time, the cities came crashing back to the ground, forcing the survivors to live on the ground as before.…
Bit late on this one today, but as always – better late than never (like yesterday). Today I went a searchin’ for something not in the superhero genre, and came up with Mark Rehkopf rendition of the Beetles (with Stuart Sutcliffe, and Pete Best, if I’m not mistaken) from the 1960’s. The early Beatles were my favorite … when they were all pretending to be Elvis. This image started as a very small pencil sketch which was scanned then finished in Photoshop. I tried to be as accurate as possible with all the crappy old guitars and amps. via Deviant…
Horrific brain eating zombies, drawn as cute and hugable, that’s sure to get little tykes in trouble when the apocalypse befalls us all, and we can thank Doug Harvey for that. via Deviant Art
I’ve been wanting to feature Adam Warren in the Art Appreciation Moment of the Day for a while now, but just didn’t find something that clicked until now. I had a chance to see the new G.I. Joe trailer a few days ago, and it blew my mind. Yes, it looks cheesy and over the top with the special effects and slowmotion fight scenes, but I really want to see it.
I think Dennis Bud is in love with Wonder Woman, as his Deviant Art page is filled with a lot of renditions of the Amazon warrior. Of all the pieces he’s done, I like this one the best. via Deviant Art
This week on the Major Spoilers Podcast, the crew is welcoming Atomic Robo artist Scott Wegener to the show. While I want to feature one of his Atomic Robo sketches, I was more taken with this Batgirl sketch. via Scott Wegener
I was searching for Supergirl images for the Art Appreciation Moment of the Day, and was amazed at how many pieces of art out there, that do not portray the cousin from Argo City as a teenager. I did find Brianne Drouhard’s rendition, which I thought fit what I was looking for. It is Supergirl. She is flying. It is her #1 skill. via Deviant Art
Surprisingly, X-Men Origins: Wolverine took the top spot at the box office this weekend, bringing in $87 million in the domestic box office – much higher than 20th Century Fox expected. Guess that kinda blows those piracy concerns out of the water, although some insiders are suggesting that the early leak of the film did cost the studio around 20 million smackers. Today’s art appreciation moment of the day comes from Mario Espinoza, who’s whipped up this radically distorted view of the overexposed hero. I like it because it is kind of the inverse Humberto Ramos – small feet, big…
Once again, it all returns to hot girls and boobies. I couldn’t leave the female heroes out of the week, and wrapping it all up in this installment is a piece by Paul Sizer. Warm up for this week’s Warren Ellis REMAKE/REMODEL project. This week: Domino Lady, a (very lame) wealthy socialite whose lawyer father gets shot and killed, so she dons a backless evening gown and a domino mask, gets her gun and goes out to fight crime. Best part: when she gets money from wealthy bad guys, she takes her cut and gives the rest to charity! Attempting…
Can’t let the Pulp Hero Art Appreciation Moment of the Week go by without featuring The Phantom. This rendition is done by Daniel Campos. While good, it’s just too bad his inspiration for today’s installment, came from watching Defenders of the Earth. Got the itch to doodle up this mess while watching Defenders of the Earth on DVD this morning before hitting the workload. I think this is maybe the second time I’ve ever drawn The Phantom but he’s really a groovy character. via Deviant Art
In the mid-to-late 1980’s I stumbled across Dave Steven’s Rocketeer comics. Not only did it feature a guy flying around fighting Nazi’s it also had some sweet Bettie Page pin-up art too. Granted, The Rocketeer isn’t really a true pulp hero, but the spirit is there and I include him in the genre… Hey, it’s my site, I’ll do what I want (wink). Instead of featuring Dave Stevens’ art, I figured I’d showcase other artists inspired by the late great one. This piece was done by Joel Ojeda Lopez, and looks really great in the composition and design. To really…
