CNN is reporting that mystery writer Mickey Spillane has died at 88. Spillane started out as a comic writer (The Sub-Mariner), but left (for a while) when his hard hitting shoot-em-up sex novel I, the Jury was released in 1946. This kicked off a series of Mike Hammer novels including such favorites as Girl Hunters, Vengeance is Mine, and The Big Kill.
Damn! Before last year, storing my immense collection of comics each month meant digging 30 boxes out of the closet, arranging them in an organized manner, adding new issues to their appropriate bin, then restacking all of the boxes back up again. This was a back breaking endeavor that I dreaded each and every month. But then I discovered a small booth at San Diego Comic Con 2005 that changed how my comics are organized.

Sir Michael Caine has confirmed what many have speculated since the ending of Batman Begins – the next film will be called The Joker. The news comes from an interview Caine did with Turner Movies UK. This is kind of a no brainer since the Joker card was seen at the end of the Bat flick. It would be very interesting if this were not just a sequel but rather a real look into the Joker’s background. It would also be great if they used the back story from A Killing Joke. Caine gave very little information on the project…
SCI FI announced that it has greenlit Painkiller Jane for 22-episodes centering on a female superhero with healing abilities. Based on the comic book by Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada, the series has not been cast yet, but is slated to premiere in January 2007.

This 22 minute animation is a great combination of horror and comedy done in the incredible style Mignola made famous with his Hellboy series. I’m not entirely sold on this movie, it could be great, but it could also be entirely lame. If you don’t know the premise – boy wants girl, boy finds girl, boy breaks up with girl, girl turns out to be superhero, boy then gets stalked and harassed by super ex-girlfriend. It stars Uma Thurman and Luke Wilson, and is directed by Ivan Reitman. You can find production stills over at the Dark Horizon’s website.
