According to Variety, The Social Network’s Armie Hammer is in negotiations to play the Lone Ranger in the upcoming Jerry Bruckheimer adaptation. If hired to play the man behind the mask, Hammer will join Johnny Depp who has been hired to play Tonto.
The Lone Ranger script is by Justin Haythe, while the movie will be directed by Gore Verbinski.

I could see him playing The Lone Ranger but I will not have anything to do with Johnny Depp playing Tonto. When a 1950’s TV series does right by getting a Native American actor to portray Tonto over a 20XX movie, then you know something is wrong. I don’t doubt Depp’s acting ability. But are there no Native American actors who could do the role justice? I just hope it’s not Jack Sparrow in Red Face.
Agreed. Also… Depp is such a huge presence that it will completely overshadow anything Hammer tries to do.

My grandfather was Native American so I’m also dissapointed that the legacy of Jay Silverheels and other Native American actors to play the part of Tonto. Silverheels portrayed a Native American as a courageous and intelligent partner of the Lone Ranger at a time when most other Native Americans on-screen were portrayed as all being stone-age whooping savages, later criticism of him as a “Uncle Tom Indian” by some notwithstanding. Yes, Depp draws an audience but I’m surprised such a noted liberal actor would accept a role instead of insisting that it went to a Native American. (Marlon Brando would not have approved!)
Let’s just hope that it’s a better rendering of the Lone Ranger and Tonto story than that awful movie in the 80’s that led to Clayton Moore having to wear sunglasses and one of the all-time classic “Night Court” episodes.
Here we go again another classic that’s going to be smashed. Hollywood just keeps striking out each time they release something that’s good basically I think they just now ran out of ideas over in Hollywood. They already have a track record of screwing up the Lone Ranger back in the 80’s
