Previously in Uncanny Avengers: Captain America reformed the Unity Squad and recruited both X-Men and the Avengers. However, they are opposed by the Mutant Liberation Front, led by Captain Krakoa. Captain Krakoa managed to place a nuclear bomb at Empire State University and went after Ben Urich, who was trying to uncover his identity. The Unity Squad intercepted the fight and realized Captain Krakoa was Steve Rodgers from an altered timeline!
Uncanny Avengers #5 continues with the fight between the Unity Squad and Steve “Grant” Rogers. The team quickly realizes that they must focus on the suit, and Monet, Psylocke, and Black Widow manage to do just that. Additionally, Captain America uses Deadpool as a human shield while Wade bites Captain Krakoa. However, the threat of a nuclear weapon is there, with no way to disarm it. Rogue prepares for the ultimate sacrifice and flies it out to safety. Quicksilver grabs Deadpool and tells him that the only way to save Rogue is to let her absorb some of Wade’s regenerative power. The nuclear explosion turns Rogue and Deadpool into skeletons, but due to Wade’s mutant healing, they slowly recover, and no one is killed.
Ben Urich published his article about Orchis, revealing who Captain Krakoa is and what happened at the Hellfire Gala. The Unity Squad also reaffirms their conviction to take down Orchis.
In this comic, the alternative version of Steve Rogers, who is going by Grant, introduces a common theme in Captain America storylines. There are American ideals shown through Captain America, and then there is a bastardization of them offered by someone else. The problem I struggled with in Uncanny Avengers #5 is that it turned this title into a Captain America-feeling comic rather than an X-Men comic, which didn’t really work for me in this case. Despite the mutants doing most of the heavy lifting within this issue, the theme greatly reflected Captain America. I like the ideas here, but it wasn’t the right choice for the Fall of X event.
The art is consistent with Marvel’s typical style. But the standout image is Rogue and Deadpool as skeletons for me and listening to their banter.
Uncanny Avengers #5 has some unique ideas; while I disagree with them, they tell a good story. This comic is easily a 3.5 out of 5, and I am hyped to see the end of the Fall of X event coming in the New Year.
