This weekend, I managed the magical cable moment of hitting a movie I didn’t know was airing, just as it began. The film in question of ‘Chasing Amy’, a film which was once my favorite of the works of Kevin Smith. Sadly, it has not aged well at all (it’s probably the most artifacty of Smith’s works, which are often pretty steeped in their specific year. ‘Amy’ was never the best of Kevin, though, even with Joey Lauren Adams delivering one of the best performances in the View Askewniverse. When it came out in ’97, it was better than ‘Mallrats’ but not quite as great as ‘Clerks’, and now there are half a dozen films above it in my hierarchy, leading to today’s Affleck’s goatee query…
The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) is a fan of most all of his stuff (though I haven’t seen ‘Tusk’ thanks to my thing about body horror), but will almost always choose “Clerks: The Animated Series“, asking: Which Kevin Smith production constitutes the BEST of Kevin?

See, for me it was and is Chasing Amy. The relative lack of crassness that bring down Clerks and Mallrats, coupled with some solid dramatic takes from the main cast, all while maintaining a solid level of nerd humor, keeps it high in the cannon for me. It’s also in the top 3 Ben Affleck movies for me.
I don’t think it could be anything else than Clerks, but: Jay & Silent Bob Reboot was actually really good and way better it had any business to be. I would never think Jason Mewes could show such range as an actor until I saw how genuine his interaction with Harley felt. It was legit good stuff.
