FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE COMIC RELIEF
The story is told from the perspective of Beast Boy starting with the fight against The Fearsome Five. He is constantly thinking about his team and when Raven is about to go too far and let that inner demon take over; he intercedes before she kills. As the Titans begin to win the fight, Beast boy takes the bomb deep into the ocean and is able to escape before the city is destroyed. However, the Disruptor reveals it is a hoax! This was a distraction while H.I.V.E. sets the world to anarchy. When the Titans begin to go after Mento and Disrupter, they decide to team up with Gizmo, Shimmer, Mammoth, and Psimon and together they take down Mento!
STEPPING INTO THE PROTAGONIST ROLE
Beast Boy is often in the shadow of other characters. Even in his inner monologue, the writer showed that sometimes his teammate doesn’t take him seriously and he knows it. However, Beast Boy is clearly the hero of this issue as he saves the day but also helps subdue the demon aspect of Raven. Sometimes writers forget about their supporting cast and forget to let them shine in the stories they are featured in. They become stock characters with no growth when they are set up to be three dimensional and Beast Boy is no exception. To see Beast Boy getting protagonist treatment was a refreshing change of pace.
The book’s pacing was rushing to reach a certain story point it needed to get too. This issue had enough content to fill an issue and a half at a minimum. I wanted more time to be taken. The team up with the Fearsome (four?) was never really explained enough to understand why it happened. I can assume the reasoning behind it but there is very little evidence to support my assumptions. This likely falls victim to the creative team only having a certain amount of comic books to tell the story and rushed the story to reach their required story beats.
I’m also not terribly familiar with this mini-series and I had a hard time picking up on the main theme. If we take it from Beast Boy’s perspective, his character theme seems to be trying to remain a good person. He was acutely aware of everything going on and we can see his decision making to constantly try and do the right thing. However, this not an arc theme and doesn’t have much depth. It seems like the point is to tell a fun story where the good guys team up with the bad guys and nothing else.
The art was respectable. It doesn’t blow you away visually but the art tells you everything you need to know. I think the art excels during action scenes where every pose needs to be dynamic and the coloring gives the drawings a modern feel. Something about seeing an octopus in the water carrying a bomb is exactly what you didn’t know you needed.
BOTTOM LINE: I MEAN… IT’S DECENT
The book reads as if it is targeting a young audience. And by young I mean pre-teen and younger. The writer explains everything to you so you won’t miss a beat. Which is fine but I didn’t find the depth of story that I wanted. If you want an easy light “bubble” read then pick this one up. 3 out of 5 for Titans: Burning Rage #3.
