IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
ARCHIE VS PREDATOR 2 #1
Writer: Alex Decampi
Artist: Robert Hack
Publisher: Archie Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Betty, Veronica, and Predator-Archie have been left in the wreckage of their town, all their friends dead. Normally, they’d just go down Memory Lane and get home again where everything’s okay, but that’s no longer an option. It isn’t until they find an undamaged car and drive it down a different road where they can finally return to Riverdale-but their hometown feels different. And it’s made even more bizarre when they come face-to-face with a few people they’d never expect: themselves. Only different, newer versions. Little do they know, Predators on Mars are watching them-planning their next attack.
STACY: The first series was a surprise hit, and this most unlikely sequel looks like the entertainment will continue. There seems to be little that the publisher is not willing to add an Archie spin to, and this one looks to be another barn burner.
STEPHEN: Someone asked me if these Archie crossovers are getting out of control. I would say these aren’t getting out of control enough! (Or something like that). Gimme more of this please.
DETECTIVE COMICS #1008
Writer: Peter J. Tomasi
Artist: Dough Mahnke, Jamie Mendoza
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION
The Joker returns to Gotham City! The Joker is through working with the Legion of Doom, and he wants to get back to his roots: giving Batman absolute hell! The Clown Prince of Crime comes back with a bang-and he’s not about to take prisoners! As if that weren’t enough, Lex Luthor delivers the cure for Mr. Freeze’s beloved wife, Nora, freeing her from cryo-stasis at last! But something else is very, very wrong with Nora…
STACY: This issue is classic Batman/Joker in a short format that is not seen often these days. This done in one comic is entertaining and has some great moments. Also, we get another glimpse into Villain of the Year with a Mr. Freeze appearance.
HOUSE OF X #1
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Pepe Larraz
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $5.99
SOLICITATION: FACE THE FUTURE! Superstar writer Jonathan Hickman (SECRET WARS, AVENGERS, FANTASTIC FOUR) takes the reins of the X-Men universe! Since the release of Uncanny X-Men #1, there have been four seminal moments in the history of the X-Men. Giant-Sized X-Men. X-Men. Age of Apocalypse. New X-Men. Four iconic series that introduced a new era for Marvel’s mutants and revolutionized the X-Men. In House of X, Charles Xavier reveals his master plan for mutantkind…one that will bring mutants out of the shadow of mankind and into the light once more.
MATTHEW: I’ll be honest: I’m not entirely sure I want this reboot nor am I confident that it’s the game-changer it wants to be, but if nothing else, morbid curiosity has a hold of me. If nothing else, I’m happy for a change from the current nihilistic nonsense of ‘Uncanny X-Men.’
STEPHEN: Never been a huge X-Men fan, but with the announcement that Jonathan Hickman will be guiding the entirety of the X-Men franchise for the foreseeable future, this is probably THE book to read this week.
INVISIBLE KINGDOM #5
Writer: G. Willow Wilson
Artist: Christian Ward
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The thrilling conclusion of the first arc! At the height of a mega-battle against Lux’s formidable ship, Grix manages to out-maneuver their opponent despite the Sundog’s less-than-battle-ready defenses. Will Vess and Grix ultimately get the help they need from Duni? And when faced the unsettling truth, will the public be with them . . . or against them?
INGRID: This has been such a fantastic book with the perfect mix of adventure and thriller, with Vess and Grix caught in the middle of a conspiracy between a mega-corporation and a religious order. The intricate storyline is full of nuance and presented with some of the loveliest art this side of the galaxy.
STAR PIG #1
Writer: Delilah Dawson
Artist: Francesco Gaston
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Like many late-21st-century teens, geeky 16-year-old Vess gets packed off to spend her summer at Space Camp—which is literally in space. Tragically, a shuttle accident sends her and the rest of the passengers careening toward a cold, frosty death among the stars. But when a gigantic, space-faring water bear miraculously rescues Vess and her beloved retro Discman, it’s the beginning of an extraordinary friendship and an incredible journey home, all set to the nostalgic tunes of Vess’s 1990s-heavy playlist.
INGRID: You guys – two words – giant tardigrade! How cool is that? Our two main characters are an Earth girl headed for science camp, and the tardigrade who rescues her from the shuttle accident. This just seems so fun I cannot wait to dig in.
STAR TREK: THE Q CONFLICT #6
Writer: Scott Tipton & David Tipton
Artist: David Messina
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: This is it-the grand conclusion of the biggest Star Trek crossover ever. As the god-like beings prepare for the final round of their games, the captains have their own surprise in store for their powerful tormentors-and they’re taking it all the way into the Q-Dimension!
MATTHEW: The Fanservice level of this series has been too high for my tastes a time or two, but I have to say I’m mostly enjoying it and wondering how four crews from four different times will resolve FOUR different omnipotent beings, even with Spock, Data, Tuvok and Dax working together.
THE TERRIFICS #18
Writer: Gene Luen Yang
Artist: Stephen Segovia
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The end of the God Game is upon us-and technology has turned the Terrifics’ lives upside down! At long last, the secret origin of the mysterious technological being known as the Keeper is revealed, and this story is actually a tale as old as time. If the Terrifics are to shut the Keeper down and stop his tech infection from spreading worldwide, our heroes will need to do something they never thought they could: stop evolution itself. The Bizarro Terrifics were almost the most dangerous things in the universe. When Lex Luthor gives them a time machine, they become the most dangerous things in the universe. This will get weird.
MATTHEW: Year of the Villain is really doing nothing for me, but Yang’s Terrifics have been a lot of fun, and I was waiting for them to remove the ‘Dark Nights: Metal’ and ‘New Age of DC Heroes’ trade dress, as Terrifics is the last man standing of that initiative.
