Steven Paul, the producer of the Ghost Rider movie and many more, has acquired the rights to the Atlas Comics library of characters and has set up a deal with Paramount to develop stories and characters for films based on the comic books.
With the success of Avengers: Endgame, Aquaman, Spider-Man, and the rest of the comic to film movies, I don’t think we are going to see a dip in comic-related movies for quite a while. But what characters could Paul’s SP Media Group develop from a company that hasn’t been active for decades? The Atlas Comics most are thinking about evolved into Marvel when Martin Goodman sold the company in 1968. In 1972, Goodman left Marvel to form Seaboard Periodicals in 1974. The 1970s Atlas Comics, which was a pioneer of creator owned titles included Iron Jaw, The Brute, Grim Ghost, Planet of Vampires, Wulf the Barbarian, and more.
If you haven’t heard of any of these characters, don’t worry, most of the characters from Atlas Comics never made it past four issues, The Destructor, which featured art by Steve Ditko and inks by Wally Wood.
According to Variety, SP Media Group plans on putting the first film into production in 2020 for a 2021 release, with budgets expected to be around the $60 million range.
