IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #15
Writer: Nick Spencer
Artist: Chris Bachalo
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION:
• Aunt May is in danger and only Spider-Man can help her…
• …You think you know where a story like this is going, but you DON’T.
• Because Taskmaster and Black Ant are on the scene, and they don’t have a problem with collateral damage.
STEPHEN: I have really enjoyed this post-Slott era a lot (though I do miss Dan Slott). Spider-man is hotter than ever, and this issue might just be the issue I need to make the week worth it. Plus, I have no idea where the story is going!
ARMY OF DARKNESS BUBBA HOTEP #1
Writer: Scott Duvall
Artist: Vincenzo Federici
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Two cult classics clash for the first time in an epic crossover miniseries: ARMY OF DARKNESS VS. BUBBA HO-TEP. Ash embarks on a soul-searching road trip to Texas on a hunch that Elvis Presley may still be alive and kicking (and supposedly vanquished a mummy)! What follows is a series of universe-spanning events that involve an Elvis jumpsuit with special time-travel abilities, a trip to 70’s Vegas, plus the reveal of an evil new Book of the Dead, the Necronomicon Ho-Tep. Has Ash met his ultimate match when trading barbs with a 4,000-year-old, foul-mouthed mummy who sucks souls? Can his idol Elvis mentor him through a mid-life crisis before it becomes his final crisis? Join the adventure in a road-tripping, time-hopping groovy tale!
STEPHEN: A clash of two worlds as Bruce Campbell’s Ash Williams, and Bruce Campbell’s Elvis Presley come together for the first time! What evil will the two take on, and will one of them finally die? (Hint: Probably not.)
BLACKBIRD #5
Writer: Sam Humphries
Artist: Jen Bartel
Publisher: Image Comics, Inc.
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Between pulling back the veil on the magic underground and learning shocking secrets from the past, Nina can’t even right now. Also, she’s terrible at flirting, and that’s getting in the way of making out with Clint.
INGRID: The more I read of Blackbird, the deeper it gets. Nina started out as the screw up, a young woman whose obsession with the magic-using Paragons gets in the way of her life (not to mention the drugs and alcohol). But as it becomes clear that the Paragons are real, her life takes on new –and unexpected – meaning. Top this story off with luminous art, and it really starts to sing.
BY NIGHT #8
Writer: John Allison
Artist: Christine Larsen
Publisher: Boom Entertainment, Inc.
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: There’s only one person on earth who knows the secrets of Charlesco: Jane and Barney’s boss, Langdon Gramercy. To get to the bottom of what’s going on in Spectrum, they plan to ply him with wine and crack open the vault of secrets.
INGRID: More and more, this is not your typical story of a portal between two worlds. Jane and Heather’s renewed friendship now involves stolen video, organized crime, monsters, a missing businessman, and the eidolon which is at the root of all this craziness that may have started years ago. Entertaining, and with plenty of plot twists and a good helping of humor.
DETECTIVE COMICS #998
Writer: Peter J. Tomasi
Artist: Doug Mahnke
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Batman’s tried everything on Earth to stop the menace hunting his friends and family…now it’s time to turn to things not of this Earth! In the past, whenever Batman’s encountered the supernatural, he’s turned to Jason Blood for guidance-and to Etrigan, the demonic entity living inside him! But securing their help is never simple, and what Blood has to show him will shake Batman to his core!
STEPHEN: We are two issues away from the big #1000! With all of the revelations that have been dropping left and right, issue #1000 will hopefully blow our minds! Until then, I’m here for Etrigan the Demon!
FLASH #64
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Rafael Sandoval, Jordi Tarragona
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “THE PRICE” part two! The two greatest detectives in the DC Universe take on the one cold case that will tear them apart!
As chief architect of the Sanctuary program that cost so much for so many, especially Wally West, Batman will be held accountable…by the Flash!
A cold case from the Justice League’s past has mysteriously re-opened, and Batman and the Flash-the only two heroes who stand a chance of cracking the case-are at each other’s throats! Our heroes must combat a demon from the past while burying their own inner demons in the process…and neither the World’s Greatest Detective nor the Fastest Man Alive will ever be the same again! But who is really pulling the strings here? And how does Gotham Girl fit into all this? Friendships will be tested and blood will be spilled in this titanic crossover event…
STEPHEN: Is Barry Allen really the greatest detective in the DCU? I know there is a lot of hate about Heroes in Crisis, but for me, the Flash connection has been fairly decent – especially if the rumors are true.
MAGIC ORDER #6
Writer: Mark Millar
Artist: Olivier Coipel
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: This explosive miniseries climax is a high-octane magical battle of good versus evil, as the remaining Magic Order wizards make a last stand against Madame Albany and the forces of darkness. Family bonds are tested, blood is spilled, and black magic threatens life as we know it.
STEPHEN: This is it! The final issue of THe Magic Order is here, and I’m loving the good vs. evil, hidden conspiracy, and secret society tale Millar has been weaving. And now that the series is over, maybe Netflix will put this on the fast track to series.
WONDER TWINS #1
Writer: Mark Russel
Artist: Stephen Byrne
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Exiled from their home planet, alien heroes Zan and Jayna must navigate life as teens on Earth at South Metropolis High School, where they’re even bigger outsiders than the typical awkward young adults. Under the watchful eye of Superman, the brother and sister pull monitor duty at the Hall of Justice as interns, while also trying to overcome the pitfalls of Zan’s brash confidence and Jayna’s shy but streetwise persona. If you think you know the Wonder Twins, think again-this book takes the form of the unexpected.
STEPHEN: Mark Russell flipped our views on The Flintstones, and took on Snagglepuss in the deep south. Now, Russell is going where we’ve all dreaded going – back to high school! I’m really interested in seeing what greater topics Russell tackles as two aliens navigate the rough world of teenagers.
