IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
ALBERT EINSTEIN, TIME MASON #2
Writer: Marcus Perry
Artist: Terry Donley
Publisher: Action Lab Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: What’s a guy to do when someone steals his brain? If you’re brilliant scientist and daring adventurer, Albert Einstein, you chase them into the ancient past. But to catch the thief, Einstein must outsmart one of history’s greatest conquerors, Alexander The Great, and defeat mythological warriors unlike anything he’s faced before. It’s adventure time again!
MATTHEW: A series that embodies the “Go big or go home” philosophy, featuring young Einstein traveling in time to stop all manner of temporal madness, including the theft of his own brain. (Not the one he’s currently using, his future brain, that is.)
STEPHEN: There is something odd about this title that seems really, really compelling. The first issue was BAM! in your face, and I expect even more high strangeness as the series continues this week.
FAITH: DREAMSIDE #3
Writer: Jody Houser
Artist: M. J. Kim
Publisher: Valiant Entertainment, LLC
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Welcome to the Dreamside, a magical realm where oddities dwell and imaginations thrive. But is this unusual new paradise truly all that it seems on the surface? Together, Faith and Doctor Mirage are about to find that behind the frills and fantasy, there may lurk nightmares…and they’re hunting for Animalia!
Don’t stray too far from the light, because Eisner-nominated writer Jody Houser (Mother Panic) and rising star MJ Kim (FAITH’S WINTER WONDERLAND SPECIAL #1) are conjuring up some truly terrifying scares for Valiant’s highest-soaring hero!
INGRID: I love Faith, and I’ve really been enjoying this story. Finally we get to see what the Dreamside is all about, what has captured Animalia, and it has truly pretty art as well.
HELLBOY AND THE BPRD 1956 #1
Writer: Chris Roberson
Artists: Yishan Li, Mike Norton, Michael Avon Oeming, Dave Stewart
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Pressure is mounting within the bureau to uncover the Soviets’ secret plans, but a suspicious cover-up leads one agent off the radar in search of answers. Meanwhile, demonic Soviet occult leader Varvara pushes her team to follow her own whims, and Hellboy is sent on the mission that would lead to his infamous misadventures in Mexico. But even more clandestine plots are at work-both inside the B.P.R.D. and out.
STEPHEN: EVEN MORE HELLBOY AND THE BPRD! It’s been a while since I’ve read a BPRD/Hellboy book, and I’m a bit behind on the current continuity, which may be a bit of a drawback for new readers. On the plus side, a bit of a hint on what happened before Hellboy went to Mexico. And it is written by Chris Roberson! Read this comic today!
IRONHEART #1
Writer: Eve Ewing
Artist: Kevin Libranda, Luciano Vecchio
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $5.99
SOLICITATION: When a group of world leaders is taken hostage by one of Spider-Man’s old foes, Riri Williams will have to step up her game. And she’ll be stunned when someone from back in Sweet Home Chicago enters her life… CHAMPIONS artist Kevin Libranda joins award-winning poet Eve Ewing, as Ironheart steps boldly out of Tony Stark’s shadow to forge her own future!
MATTHEW: Not loving the 5 dollar pricetag, but I’ve been looking forward to this book ever since they announced the existence of the character. Here’s hoping she sticks around…
MIGHTY MORPHIN’ POWER RANGERS #33
Writer: Marguerite Bennett, Ryan Ferrier
Artist: Simone Di Meo, Bachan, French Carlomagno, Francesco Mortarino
Publisher: BOOM! Studio
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: BEYOND THE GRID continues as an all-star team of Power Rangers struggles to survive a hostile new environment with diminishing powers and no allies. Meanwhile, Andros (Red Space Ranger) comes to terms with the lengths that he will go, and the lines he will cross, to reunite with his sister, Karone.
MATTHEW: It’s rare that the follow-up to a big crossover event is better than the event itself, and since ‘Shattered Grid’ was really good, that’s saying something. Looking forward to this whole arc, especially with the All-Star Ranger team.
QUINCREDIBLE #1
Writer: Rodney Barnes
Artist: Selina Espiritu
Publisher: Lion Forge
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Quinton, a high school sophomore, is looking to live his best life by moonlighting as a superhero. The catch? His power is invulnerability . . . and that’s the only power he has. Naturally, he does the thing any fifteen year old would do and sets out to save the day, but he’s going to have to get creative if he’s planning on taking on bad guys with only 120 pounds of power behind those fists.
INGRID: I am excited about this book. I love stories about young superheroes growing into their powers, and while invulnerability is really good, it isn’t exactly flashy, so figuring out how to put it to use has some potential. Plus, it’s set in New Orleans, after Katrina and another event that gave people powers, so it just really seems cool!
