We Have Captain Marvel Pictures, People!
As has become tradition for movies coming out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe camp, Captain Marvel made her debut this week with an astonishing cover of Entertainment Weekly – that finally shows us Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers in her full comic book costumed glory! – and ten never-before-seen photographs.
As evidenced by the photos, the Skrulls are finally coming to the MCU! Ever since they were not the main alien foes of the first Avengers movie fans have been clamoring to see them in live action – film ownership rights be damned! Also featured in Jude Law’s possible appearance as Mar-Vell and Monica Rambeau making her on-screen debut a.k.a. Photon!
While fans have responded very positively to the look of these photos, there has been some criticisms fairly lobbed at Captain Marvel’s marketing team. By this same time in Wonder Woman’s production schedule we had already seen a full trailer and several bts photographs along with a number of public appearances from the creative forces behind the movie.
Captain Marvel will not be able to escape the Wonder Woman comparisons. Both are the first solo female-led films in their respective franchises. While Warner Bros. treated Wonder Woman with a fanfare that heralded the importance of this film, Marvel doesn’t seem as interested in celebrating what sets this apart – or even acknowledging that its taken the better-part of 20 movies to get a femme-led movie.
James Bond Joins the Doom Patrol
In spite having not launched yet, DC Comic’s titular streaming service DC Universe keeps adding shows and making casting announcements according to Variety. Former James Bond actor Timothy Dalton has joined the cast of The Doom Patrol in a pretty key role – “The Chief” a.k.a. Dr. Niles Caulder. He is the key force behind the rag-tag superhero team The Doom Patrol and known for his brilliant controversial approach to medicine.
Dalton joins a near complete cast including: Robotman (Brendan Fraser), Negative Man, Elasti-Woman (April Bowlby), and Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero) and Cyborg (Joivan Wade) – continuing Warner Bros. trend of casting different actors to play the same role in their respective film and television projects.
Doom Patrol is set to debut some time in 2019 although it wouldn’t be the first DC Universe show to get its premiere date pushed back. Given the fact that one of the most recognizable members of the team if Beast Boy one wonders if this series won’t spin directly out of Titans season 1 (also appearing on DC Universe), where Big Hero 6 actor Ryan Potter is playing Gar Logan.
If the show is going to be birthed independent of Beast Boy then there may yet be room for even more divergence from the comic books then we could possibly imagine.
Henry Cavill Set to Star in Witcher
Variety has announced that the Witcher series (based on the popular video game series), that is headed to Netflix has cast its leading man, Geralt of Rivia, in none other than Superman, himself, Henry Cavill.
“Based on the best-selling fantasy series, “The Witcher” follows Geralt of Rivia (Cavill), a solitary monster hunter, as he struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.”
Witcher will be Cavill’s first television role since his supporting role as Charles Brandon, Lord Suffolk in The Tudors. It is obviously not his first foray into popular culture adaptation, though some grittier than fans of the DCEU may be used to seeing him in. He’s not even the first member of The Justice League that Netflix has been able to court into a television deal with Aquaman star Jason Mamoa starring in Frontier.
