Major Spoilers Question of the Day: Down At Fraggle Rock Edition

Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonMay 29, 20188 Comments1 Min Read

As one of the million of ’70’s kids who grew up with Sesame Street and The Muppet Show, the work of Jim Henson and company are a major component of my childhood.  (I also loved The Electric Company, but can’t remember if that had any Muppets within.)  Thanks to my family’s lack of pay-cable, though, I never got to experience the surreal madness that is Fraggle Rock firsthand as a kid.  As an adult, having access to the show, I realize that’s a real shame.  I realize now that Fraggle Rock is probably the least commercialized versions of Henson’s expressions of friendship and acceptance, leading to today’s velveteen query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) has a great affection for Jerry Nelson’s voice work, and he’s ALL OVER that show, asking: Are you one of the lucky ones who got to see Fraggle Rock?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

I remember seeing plenty of Muppets as a kid, but was too young to really remember any details, so I really don’t know.

I feel like I remember not getting to see it originally, but then finding it in syndication or something elsewhere later on.

Vague memories though; possibly not to be trusted.

I was a little too old for it in 1983 but I loved it!

Was a fairly big part of my childhood, as I had a bit of an obsession with puppet based series (particularly Jim Henson related works). Before I started school, I used to watch the episodes over and over, and the even more as I studied the puppet work to try to emulate it.

Still one of my dreams to have a Fraggle puppet, I was really hoping they would have offered a Fraggle-esque Muppet Whatnot puppet base when FAO Schwarz had the Muppet Whatnot Workshop custom puppets (one body came kinda close, but wasn’t close enough for my tastes).

I kinda hated Fraggle Rock when I first encountered it, but there’s a lot of it that I like now, all the non-fraggle puppets were brilliant. (not that the fraggles themselves weren’t cool)

Yes. It was an extremely imaginative show, even for Jim Henson. I was old enough (19) to appreciate it. I think I enjoyed the Doozers and Uncle Travelling Matt the best. I with it would be revived.

Yep, I grew up watching it, though I forgot about it for years. I went back and watched some episodes again a few years ago and was impressed by what a fantastic and just high quality and wholesome show it was.

Loved it!! Even had the happy meal-ish type toys for years. (They may have been from a happy meal, who knows).

Side note: I will now have the theme song in my head all day. :)
