Major Spoilers Question of the Day: Top Kick Edition

Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonNovember 19, 20173 Comments1 Min Read

There are a lot of fictional martial artists in our various worlds of pop culture, with myriad styles and bits of flair.  Danny Rand’s namesake power turns his fist into a thing unto iron, while Lady Shiva has beaten even the vaunted Batman hand-to-hand, and as for Chirrut Îmwe, he is not only strong with The Force, he’s freakin’ Donnie Yen.  (Either one is an impressive feat.)  Still and all, foot fighting gets short shrift, left to the likes of Batroc Ze Leapair and Street Fighter’s Vega, both of whom are admittedly cool, but never seem to get top billing, leading us to today’s jumping side query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) is a recent convert to the world of Kamen Rider (or rather, all the Kamen Riders), but will note that not many other supers have a kick NAMED AFTER them, asking: Which fictional martial-arts master has the top kick of all?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

I’m just going to go with Takeshi Hongo, the first Kamen Rider. The guy is over 70 and still shows up to kick monster backside when the new guys can’t handle it alone, and even got a nifty new power-up form a year or two ago. His kicks might not be as flashy as some of the more recent Rider’s Rider Kick variations, but it still gets the job done.
