It’s funny (to me) that the episode airs the very week I start trying to get I shape. I feel like I am starting small but the exercise regimen I am going with is called “The Batman Workout.” I like it because it gets me moving a lot without having to go anywhere, and I get to feel like I am training to become the Dark Knight. Right now I am straining more because my gut keeps me from having the full range of motion I need for this workout but I hope in time I can move without as much effort.
Thanks for the shoutout :), however you may have exaggerated the size of my arms (and i was a paratrooper). i think the most important thing for increasing anyones fitness is first to find an activity they enjoy. you are not going to stick with something you hate. it may be lifting weights, playing a sport, walking the dog, whatever. just some activity that gets you more active that you enjoy. i love lifting weights and find running insanely boring but many people love the running mindset. the other 2 things are drinking water (not soda or coffee) and eating healthy. with water just try to decrease your consumption of any liquid that isn’t water and substitute water for it. don’t try to change everything at once, just start with drinking one less soda today and having a glass of water instead. do the same thing with food. we all know what is good for us, fruits and vegetables. just eat a banana instead of a granola bar today. tomorrow you can add another healthy choice. and when you do break down and eat something you know you shouldn’t (and you most definitely will) don’t kill yourself over it just tone it down. if you break down and go to dairy queen for a blizzard just get a small. also get an app like loose it or something similar just to keep track of what your eating, you will be amazed at the stuff you are eating just because your bored and you can see easy fixes to what your doing. just being conscious of what your putting in your gob will change your eating habits.
personally i use a couple apps for doing ab work that i love since i hate doing ab work and its great to keep me on track. i use ab Trainer x, ab workout and abs. i also used the Get Running app to build up to running 5k last winter and really liked it. on a personal note for food i got addicted to grapefruit. if you want to loose weight, start every meal with a grapefruit. sounds stupid but it works. if you like grapefruit anyways :)
Jeff aka Bronco
First, I want to say that if you’re out there and you want to lose weight or get strong or whatever, I want to help you. For free, no gimmicks, no products, I just want to help you. Drop me an email at ohyayitstrey@gmail.com and I’ll help you do what I did and learn how to wade through all the heap of information that is the fitness industry.
I’ve lost 14lbs over the past few months and the way I did it was by saying “You know what? This week, my goal is to lose ONE POUND even if it kills me. That will be my only goal and nothing will stop me.” One pound is a totally doable for anyone in a week. Often, I’d lose more than that. The only thing I did was track what I was eating in MyFitnessPal and make sure I was under my calories.
And I TOTALLY agree with Bronco that fitness is about finding an activity that is physical that you enjoy doing. For me, I love lifting weights and I love martial arts like Brazillian Jiu Jitsu. I hate running for cardio, but I will literally wrestle anybody at any time.
As far as motivation goes, I don’t believe in it. I’m almost never motivated to work out. The only way I get to the gym is by mentally tricking myself. Discipline is a far better thing to develop than motivation. Discipline helps you stay the course when you don’t want to, and discipline helps you return when you falter.
Finally, changing how I view food has helped me a ton in my weight loss journey. Food for me is no longer “healthy” or “unhealthy.” There’s really no such thing. Asking if a food is “healthy” is like trying to decide if you’re going to invest in a stock while only looking at the performance over the course of a day. Without context, a stock’s performance is meaningless. Without the context of what you’re eating in a whole day or a whole week, one food can’t be judged to be healthy or not. For instance, most people would say donuts are unhealthy. But if you asked them if it was okay to eat 1 donut per week, they’d probably say that’s fine, especially compared to 1 donut a day or 1 donut per meal. Once we start to see that, we can start asking questions like “is this food nutritionally dense? Will it be satiating? And does it fit into my daily macronutrient and caloric needs for the day?” These questions are much more useful than “is this healthy?”
That was a good interview. Loved it. Personally I listen to your podcasts while running! I love the mindset. Being in my bubble while not giving a rat’s ass of any other person. I run a 10 km (Canada here!) usually 3-4 times a week and play sports twice a week. The Major Spoilers network had provided me with good entertainment while running since I started listening, around 2010 and I’m happy to give a little back by being a subscriber. Keep up the good work. And if you start working out, the key is fun. You have to have fun at whatever activity you are doing. Take care guys and Ashley, you rock!
Thanks Simon!
I must say first, this was an outstanding interview and I think you may have started something very awesome for all us Spoilerites!
So, yes I have achieved 1st Degree Black Belt in ATA Taekwondo, and had to register with the CIA, MI6 and Canadian Mounties. It took almost 5 years of hard work, dedication, sweet, tears, and 1 trip to the ER. But I am still in awe that I have done this, and the best thing is that it is not even the end to my training!
The one piece of advice I would give everyone starting to get in shape or working out is “Do NOT do it alone!” I think the support of friends, family, and/or co-workers is vital in keeping you motivated, disciplined, and focused on getting you to your goal. Even online communities (Like Major Spoilers) can help out when you are having a bad day. I started Taekwondo after my son started, because I thought, “I can do that (without too much bodily harm)”. Then my daughter also joined, and is probably better then both of us. My wife and I, with a few of our friends have Fitbits and we challenge each other all the time with the app. I believe having the support of a team makes all the difference in the world.
One of the tools I am using is Warrior X-Fit (http://www.warriorxfit.com/), it is a free site that has new workouts every day and does focus on marshal art type training. They do a new 20 minute workout video every day that does a combination of strength training and cardio. All you need is a computer and a resistance band, you don’t even need to leave you house. You do up to 6 exercises and can customize them to your work out needs. For each exercise you do as many reps as you can for 20sec then rest for 10sec, which is one set, you do 6 sets for each exercise. You rest for 40sec then start the next one. It’s good for toning up and cardio! One of the nice things on the site is way to setup a team with your friends so you can challenge each other head to head. Also it starts you at a beginning level and increasing your target reps as you get better and stronger!
So I will leave you with a quote my instructor tells me all the time when we are training – “Pain is only weakness leaving the body”
Thanks again everyone at Major Spoilers, for all that you do.
I used to have horrible legs cramps, the kind that woke you up at night and left you with a limp for the rest of the day.
Then I started doing calf stretches every morning before breakfast, added some sit ups, some free weights and they are gone now!
I really recommend to anyone who has a job that has them sitting most of the day to add some morning excises to their daily routine and if visiting a gym is a possibility go for it. It doesn’t need to be a hardcore routine, I do 10 minutes a day and the difference is palpable.
Been listening to Major Spoilers in the gym for years now. Kinda dangerous, too. You guys have made me laugh out loud mid-bench press on more than one occasion.
I’ve had wonderful success lately with intermittent fasting, as outlined on the Road to Ripped podcast. They’re kinda mimbos, but they know what they’re talking about. Basically you skip breakfast, then make sure you get an appropriate amount of calories for your goals throughout the rest of your day. I’ve lost %4 body fat in three months. Easiest time I’ve ever had losing fat. I can’t recommend it enough.
I just listened to this Podcast and I have the perfect topic for a twenty minute discussion on your show!
You were talking about gameification of exercise, and Google team did just this. Niantic actually just split off from Google into their own company, and for a few years, now, they have been running a mobile game called Ingress. It’s a sci-fi themed game where two sides (blue and green) are in conflict to control regions of the globe. You play by walking around to nearby points of cultural interest (statues, murals, churches, historical landmarks). You interact with these locations with your phone to get items, to capture them, and then to link them together to form triangles. At 5 hour check points, your team scores points for all the triangular fields made.
Granted you could (and many do) play this game in your car, but it has a badge system that includes number of kilometers walked. So far, I have accumulated 2837 km. I discovered this game during a time when I was afraid I might be having heart problems. It turned out to be something else, but after several years of a dormant lifestyle, this game got me out walking around and discovering many more people doing the same thing. I’ve also discovered so many cool locations and surrounding towns that I would not have visited. Now, my endurance is back up. I could walk all day around my city without tiring if I didn’t have other commitments.
I suggest trying out the game to level 8 (when you can use max level items) and then discuss it on your podcast. (Please, join the Resistance!) It is really fun!
I know my choice isn’t for everyone, but hear me out first. :) My favorite exercise is dance, and for me that is belly dance. I’ve been taking it long enough that I am in an advanced class, and let me tell you, not only is it a great workout, but I’m doing it at a level where I can’t possibly get bored. And, with the way my teacher teaches, it is a whole body workout. It is part aerobics, part strength training, part stretching. And then we spend spend some time every week doing improvisation. And then we learn choreographies at a good pace. That makes it a mental workout as well as a physical work out. Which also makes it a huge stress reliever – I have to spend so much time thinking about what I’m doing that there just isn’t room for all the stresses and annoyances from work.
I found out a while ago that I can get bored with a repeated workout, and then I have to pay attention and not let myself go into autopilot, because my autopilot means my body goes through the motions without working very hard. I’m older, and not a competitive sports type person either. But I learned right from the start that with dance, there are always new and different things to do, variations to try, things to improve, and things to add. It is one physical activity I can do and literally never get bored. Throw “doing my own choreography” into the mix and it just expands it more.
I wish I had more time for dancing, but my basic “I can do this anywhere” fallback is walking. I just turn on one of the many fine podcasts brought to us by the Major Spoilers Podcast Network and go for a brisk couple miles. Unless I’m walking the dog, who is old, and who likes to sniff, in which case we’ll go for a nice meandering mosey.
