It’s New Comic Book Day!
What should you pick up this week? The Major Spoilers Staff runs down the titles they are most looking forward to this week.
ANIMAL MAN #28
Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist: Greg Capullo, Danny Miki
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “’Evolve or Die!’ concludes as Animal Man marshals every last bit of power he has to protect his daughter from Brother Blood! But will it be enough to save Maxine and the Red — or will Buddy lose another child?”
WAYNE: I’m so sorry this book is coming to an end soon, but I’m going to enjoy it like crazy until this hero joins the Justice League!
CAPTAIN AMERICA #17
Writer: Rick Remender
Artist: Nic Klein
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “DR. MINDBUBBLE” PART 1
• The Weapon Minus program reopened! Now that it is, can Captain America put Dr. Mindbubble back inside?
• The Iron Nail begins assassinating the heads of the five largest corporations.
• With Captain America unhinged, Falcon and Jet Black are forced to make a terrible choice!
GEORGE: One of the things Rick Remender does best is create absolutely bonkers villains. I loved the new Four Horseman he introduced in Uncanny X-Force. In Captain America, he’s bringing us Dr. Mindbubble, an LSD-fueled super soldier-type from Weapon Minus. That’s… awesome.
DARK HORSE PRESENTS #33
Writer:Christopher Sebela, Jamie S. Rich, Darrin Grimwood, Brendan McCarthy, Dean Motter, Mike Baron, Michael T. Gilbert, Phil Stanford, Fred Van Lente, Rich Johnston, Chad Lambert
Artist:Brendan McCarthy, Dean Motter, Michael T. Gilbert, Brian Churilla, Brent Schoonover, Steve Rude, Patric Reynolds, Reilly Brown, Simon Rohrmüller, Christine Larsen
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $7.99
SOLICITATION: Christopher Sebela (Captain Marvel, Ghost) crafts a horror tale from World War II—there’s blood in the water in Cruel Biology! And two misters return to the pages of DHP, as Dean Motter delivers a new noir tale starring Mister X and Michael T. Gilbert’s Mr. Monster faces off against a telepathic threat bent on world domination!
Plus, new installments of Nexus, Fred Van Lente’s Saint George, Kill Me, and more!
RODRIGO: I’m down with a story called “Cruel Biology”, Dark Horse Presents is probably the most solid anthology book out there right now. Also, has a name that could be mistaken for occult gifts given to stallions on their birthdays.
GI JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO #199
Writer: Larry Hama
Artist: SL Galant
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: THE ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN! G.I. JOE has escaped the situation in Sierra Gordo intact… but COBRA has taken over their headquarters! That means only one thing: it’s time for a head-to-head confrontation between America’s best and the villainous COBRA COMMANDER’s forces. Join the battle in G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #199 and prepare for everything to change in next month’s landmark issue #200!
GEORGE: It looks like there might be a throwdown between Cobra Commander and Snake Eyes coming up. We’ve actually seen this matchup before, right before the series was canceled in the Marvel days, and it was awesome. I could read Larry Hama writing Snake Eyes beating up Cobra Commander until the end of time.
GHOSTED #7
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Miroslav Mrva
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “Organ thieves, slave traffickers: Jackson Winters will have to do business with all the wrong people to find his lost girl. Unfortunately, ghosts of the very recent past will be dogging his every step…”
WAYNE: I’ve been completely surprised by this book ever since I picked up the first issue. Don’t miss it!
NEW WARRIORS #1
Writer: Christopher Yost
Artist: Marcus To
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: WARRIORS REBORN! Adventurers SPEEDBALL and JUSTICE have come together with a group of young heroes including NOVA, SUN GIRL, and HUMMINGBIRD (and even a couple of new faces) to stop the latest threat to the Marvel Universe—the Atlanteans, Inhumans, clones and hundreds of other so-called “superior” beings are living among the humans of the Marvel Universe, but not everyone is pleased about it. THE HIGH EVOLUTIONARY has raised an army to combat the evolution of humanity – and the New Warriors are locked in his sights!
MATTHEW: It’s a New Warriors title. They’ve never managed to recapture the magic of Volume 1, but I’m a comics fan, I have infinite hope, and infinite snark when things go wrong. Either way, I’m in.
SKYMAN #2
Writer: Joshua Hale Fialkov
Artist: Manuel Garcia, Bit
Publisher: Dark Horse
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: “Still trying to overcome his fear of flying after a plane crash that nearly killed him, Sgt. Eric Reid doesn’t have time for PTSD as the new Skyman! The superhero’s life isn’t made any easier by the confrontations with his handler and the shocking number of bugs plaguing his suit. And matters are made even worse as he discovers someone’s trying to sabotage the suit and smear his good name!”
WAYNE: The first issue recently took off with a bang, so I’m anxious to get the second chapter in this miniseries. I highly recommend this book! To listen to my interview with Mr. Fialkov, go to this link!
SUPERGIRL #28
Writer: Tony Bedard
Artist: Yildiray Cinar, Ray McCarthy
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: 2.99
SOLICITATION: A RED LANTERN RING is coming to get Kara — and it will change her forever! No lie! Not an imaginary story! It’s really going to happen! “Red Daughter of Krypton” starts here!
MATTHEW: Man, this could be awful or this could be the newest and coolest. Whichever it is, I’m interested in seeing how it turns out…
RODRIGO: Oh, thank God! For a second I thought “Red Daughter of Krypton” was going to be a follow-up to Superman: Red Son.
STEPHEN: I’ve only read one or two issues of Supergirl from the New 52, so I don’t know what to expect, whether I’m going to love it or hate it, but darn it, Supergirl is just too interesting of a character to not give this issue a chance. Especially if it changes everything we’ve ever known… again.
UNDERTOW #1
Writer: Steve Orlando
Artist: Artyom Trakhanov
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Atlantis is the world superpower, and Redum Anshargal is its worst enemy. If you want to break free of the system, he can offer you a place at his side, exploring the wild surface world in his watertight city barge The Deliverer. He and his hostage-protege Ukinnu Alal hunt the Amphibian, a legend that could be the key to an air-breathing life on land. But as they become the hunted, can Anshargal’s team survive long enough to turn the tables on the godlike beast they set out for?
A brand new pulp monster adventure with Ray Harryhausen at its heart and a look at Atlantis like never before from the up-and-coming team of writer STEVE ORLANDO (Mystery in Space) and artist ARTYOM TRAKHANOV.
RODRIGO: This is the one I’m looking forward to the most this week. Seriously, if you had asked me last year what the #1 most overlooked genre in comics was I would have answered “Fish Espionage.”
STEPHEN: Having already read the issue, Rodrigo isn’t totally wrong about Fish Espionage, but the hunt for the holy grail that will allow the Atlanteans to breathe air is kind of a cool concept.
X-FILES CONSPIRACY TMNT #1
Writer: Ed Brisson
Artist: Michael Walsh
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Turtles are doing their best to avoid trouble in Northampton. Unfortunately, trouble finds them in the form of the Lone Gunmen! The fate of the world depends on the Gunmen getting the reclusive Turtles’ help. Add in an undead menace and things are going to get downright dangerous!
MATTHEW: Crossover madness that makes sense (at least more so than Star Trek/Ghostbusters), and an interesting premise. What will Mulder make of the rumors of human turtles in the sewers? Will Scully fall for Raphael? Probably not, but it’s a premise worth at least checkin’ out.
ZERO TP VOL 1
Writer: Ales Kot
Artist: Michael Walsh & Various
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $9.99
SOLICITATION: Edward Zero was the best spy the Agency had-and then he realized he was working for the wrong side.
Collects ZERO #1-5
GEORGE: Ales Kot is the hot new thing, and Zero is one of the reasons why. For 10 bucks, you get five issues of artsy, heady, espionage action. This is a thing I recommend.
