Previously in The Voice Said Kill: Still reeling from her encounter with heir to the local crime family, Buck Watters, park ranger Marie has been informed that a body has been found, one that she thought would never escape the waters of the bayou.
GOING DEEPER
The Voice Said Kill #2 starts off with Marie getting called to the scene of where a body has been discovered. It turns out to be in a dumpster in a motel parking lot. A pair of bystanders who apparently saw the deceased man in an argument earlier try to assist in the investigation, but Marie has suspicions. Later on, Marie and her dispatcher have a heart-to-heart via Marie’s earpiece radio. Afterwards, Marie decides to go back to the motel, which is where she stumbles upon the pair from earlier with others, planning something nefarious. She ends up getting caught by the group and being forced to be their guide through the bayou. As the group makes it through the murky waters, Marie begins to understand how this new problem might be connected to her previous issues.
A NEW BRAND OF TENSION
The Voice Said Kill #2 builds on a strong first issue in both effective ways and some not-so-good ways. On the good side of things, I liked how they tied in the events of the previous issue and the lingering threat of Buck Watter’s mother into the events of this issue. There’s some clever storytelling at work here, in which, for a brief moment, there’s a hint that Marie’s problems are solved, only to find out that they’ve only mutated. I’m also glad that Marie isn’t rendered helpless in this issue. She’s been given tools and a means to overcome things; she just has to play it right. Now, I’m not as much of a fan of introducing so many new characters as a way to complicate matters. Their introduction doesn’t feel graceful, and the way that Marie stumbles upon them doesn’t feel earned in terms of a story beat. But even though their introduction is a bit clunky, the menace and threat that these new characters represent feel real and intense.
THE GOOD AND BAD OF VARIETY
Much like the writing in The Voice Said Kill #2, the visuals have both some good qualities and some bad qualities, both based around the same thing. Everything about the setting and sense of place that was so well done in the first issue is still here, but the design and work on the characters isn’t as strong. On one hand, each character looks unique. There’s no confusion about one for anyone else, especially in the case of the young woman who’s with the criminals; her look is used effectively to create a pretty scary character. That being said, this need to make each character look completely different from each other also leads to some of them having some cartoonish qualities. Now, while I wouldn’t say that the style of this series is very realistic, it hasn’t gone too far outside the realms of normal human proportions, but there are a few panels where some of the characters get to that point.
BOTTOM LINE: STILL GOING STRONG, WITH A COUPLE OF WEAK SPOTS
The Voice Said Kill #2 is a good follow-up to the excellent first issue of this series. It builds on the events in some clever ways and ramps up the tension effectively. Some of the weaker points, though, come from some less-than-stellar storytelling that relies a bit on circumstance and random happenstance. Also, the visuals, while still stellar a majority of the time, do come off as sloppy in a couple of areas. Other than those couple of areas, this is a good comic and another strong chapter in this miniseries. 4 out of 5 stars.

The Voice Said Kill #2
The Voice Said Kill #2 is a well put together continuation that introduces some new characters and sources of tension. Some of which are done well, some of which are not so well. But it comes together nicely and is a pretty effective second chapter.
