ARTISTS, MODELS, AND EXPLORERS
The Seasons #2 opens with Autumn Season hiking her way to a mysterious temple. Armed with her father’s instructions on how to enter, she approaches the front door. In her way, a guardian offers her a deal of which she rejects. Inside, she finds a sarcophagus and, after opening it, realizes that she might not have followed her father’s guide perfectly. Elsewhere, Spring argues with her goldfish about whether she should just quit her job and leave, as the letter says. She enters the bedroom of her sister Winter, who is in the middle of painting. Spring attempts to explain the situation but, in doing so, apparently ruins her sister’s painting and earns her the scorn of Winter. Somewhere on a beach, Summer Season is greeting the press as her staff desperately try to figure out how to deal with the sun in order to achieve Summer’s desired photoshoot. One of the reporters informs Summer about the magical carnival that is drawing all the biggest celebrities, which sparks her interest. Back at home, Spring receives a mysterious letter.
UNEVENTFUL AND INCOMPLETE
Coming off the first issue of the series, which was packed full of adventure and movement, The Seasons #2 changes pace drastically. This issue acts as a sort of bigger introduction to the four sisters and gives a deeper dive into their personalities. The problem is that the way that this is accomplished is by having four nearly unconnected scenes featuring each sister. While we do get a decent look at each sister and what they’re up to, what we don’t get is a comic that feels whole. Also, the scenes we get aren’t very interesting. Even Spring, who has emerged as the focal point of the series, just sort of meanders around her house, making breakfast and arguing with her fish. What this issue basically becomes is four separate conversations without any connective tissue other than the staples holding the book together. Now, on the other hand, what this issue does do incredibly well is giving us a better look at the world this story takes place in. Little details like background posters, how the press is presented, and a few names of locations casually dropped, create an image that this is somewhere between a fantasy world and an alternate Earth dipped into 50s and 60s ephemeras. Also, while this issue doesn’t do much with them, there are still a few breadcrumbs scattered about hinting towards whatever the central mystery will be, which manage to create intrigue.
FLESHING THINGS OUT
While we got a pretty good look at the town where Spring lives in the first issue, The Seasons #2 expands things and gives us a peek at a few other locations of this world. While nothing really veers away from the cozy, whimsical look already established, we still get a couple new iterations on it. Also, getting to see how each sister differs from each other visually helps to drive home the idea that they are very much not a cohesive unit. Other than that, it’s more of the same from the first issue, which isn’t a bad thing at all.
BOTTOM LINE: NECESSARY BUT UNINSPIRED
The Seasons #2 has the dirty job of giving the reader a clearer view of the world and the characters that inhabit it. If looking at it in terms of bare bones success or failure, it’s a success. But it doesn’t get there elegantly or interestingly. At the end of the day, while we finally met all of the sisters, nothing really happened in this issue, just promises for things to happen in later issues. 3 out of 5 stars.

The Seasons #2
The Seasons #2 is a mostly motionless affair that utilizes its time to introduce characters and locations, but in uninteresting and disjointed ways.
