Previously in Avengers: Twilight: In the future, the world is haunted by H-Day, where the battle between Ultron and the Avengers left many heroes dead. Now, America is a totalitarian country where people are controlled into a false sense of security. Steve retook the Super-Soldier Serum and became Captain America, recruiting a new team and now fights against the Red Skull, who had unleashed his secret weapon, the Hulk!
Avengers: Twilight #6 features several distinct storylines. Tony Stark reunites with Jan and his son James. Jan hid within his son’s ring, waiting for a code from Tony to wake her up from stasis. As the Wasp, she can redirect the nuke coming towards DC. Thor goes head-to-head with a mind-controlled Hulk, and Steve Rogers’ serum begins to wear off, and he squares against the Red Skull.
Meanwhile, Ms. Marvel and Hawkeye work with the Defenders to keep fighting and saving civilians. Eventually, the team defeats the Red Skull, but there is a fail-safe. James Stark prepares to sacrifice himself by taking Red Skull’s body into space, but Tony sacrifices him. Additionally, Hulk claims he wants to die, and Thor is forced to make the hard decision to kill his old friend.
After a few weeks, James Stark, the new Hawkeye, and Ms. Marvel begin to repair Avengers Mansion, and Thor pulls a few strings. He has arranged for Tony and Bruce to spend their afterlife in Valhalla.
A lot has happened since the previous issue came out, and I do not remember many of the details leading up to this conclusion. However, after a few pages of Avengers: Twilight #6, I was right back into the story. Much of that is due to the art. The artwork on these pages is gorgeous, and the style appeals to my artistic sense quite a bit. I love seeing the new interpretation of these heroes, and seeing this version of the Wasp, both in and out of her super suit, was great! It took me longer to get into the writing, but I thought the Tony Stark sacrifice was well-written. However, I wasn’t emotionally impacted by the Stark family’s sacrifice here. On the other hand, Hulk wanting to die and Thor placing his hammer on him as he drowned was vivid, and I’ll be thinking about that for weeks to come.
This was a great conclusion to a well-designed series, and I am happy I got to read it. Great work and vision from Chip and Daniel.
I would love to read this when the trade comes out. I think it will be something I’ll revisit occasionally because the themes appeal to my sensibilities. With that in mind, Avengers: Twilight #6 gets 5 out of 5 stars. It isn’t a perfect book, but it is pretty dang close.
