Previously in Gargoyles: The Gargoyles were betrayed by humans and placed under a magic spell for a thousand years. Now, they are back in Manhattan, and the spell is broken! The public is aware of the existence of Goliath and his clan and has mixed feelings. Goliath and his human allies are now here to maintain smooth relations while keeping an eye out for Demona and whatever schemes she is up to.
Gargoyles: Quest #1 begins with Demona stealing the Lancehead of Gugnir, an artifact supposedly incapable of missing its intended target. Meanwhile, in Manhattan, people protest against monsters at an event that Goliath is speaking at. Here, Goliath meets his fans. Meanwhile, Toni Dracon watches Goliath and his speech. Toni argues with Elisa Masa, and the conversation suggests a war between the crime families. On top of that, the Manhattan clan is dealing with commitment ceremonies, new kids, and unease about the growing tensions between humans and gargoyles.
Goliath’s speech goes off well and is well-received; however, someone attacks the event. Goliath quickly destroys the weapon and captures the shooter, which further helps the relationship between the two people. Meanwhile, Demona has gathered a team of people and plans to acquire the Hand of Valmont and the promise to get three new keys to power!
I loved the cartoon growing up, and I think these characters have a ton of potential. I haven’t been reading the comic series, and my memory of these characters may not be accurate. However, when I started reading Gargoyles: Quest #1, I was back on the couch as a kid watching the cartoon. I like these characters and the conflict between Demona and the Manhattan clan. And I see this, and I remember that I also liked the X-Men cartoon, and I wonder if I just have a plot type I enjoy.
Despite not knowing the recent storylines, I found the comic easy to follow. I understood Demona was a bad guy; she stole powerful objects, and I understood that Goliath and his clan were a family. And the importance of family permeates throughout the comic. I want to see how the Manhattan clan does and how it parallels the team Demona is trying to bring together. Great work here to get me into the moment.
When I read a comic that started as a cartoon, I knew that the art was designed to mimic the show. And it mimics that reasonably well. The characters are well-designed, and Goliath and Demona are visually striking on the page. The backgrounds did not detract from the main focus of the panels and added details when needed.
Whenever I read a comic based on something from my childhood, I often wonder if it is my nostalgia talking or a good comic. I can confidently say that this story is a solid comic for new and old readers interested in modern supernatural elements. Gargoyles: Quest #1 is a solid 4 out of 5 stars and deserves a pick-up.
