Previously in Fall of X: Storm and Magneto moved to Arakko to help this new civilization settle on Mars. To defeat the Eternal Uranos, Magneto sacrificed himself. Now, Storm manages to bring peace after the Civil War with Genesis, and Krakoan mutants are scattered after the attack by Orchis on the Hellfire Gala while trying to show these mutants that peace is possible.
Resurrection of Magneto #1 takes us to the perspective of Storm, who has nightmares of Magneto. In this particular nightmare, Magneto claims he was wrong while standing amongst five of his iconic helmets. Storm then heads to a Kadesh base and meets with Dr. Adam Brashear to potentially bring Magneto back or ensure he is safe in death. We are then introduced to the “Waiting Room,” a place the Scarlet Witch created between life and death for mutant souls. Storm heads straight to the Waiting Room with little hesitation.
There, she meets Tarn the Uncaring, whom Magneto killed. When Storm reveals her intentions, Tarn attacks, showing the full extent of his powers. However, he is no match for Storm. Storm then meets Ashaka, one of her ancestors from ancient Egypt, who tells her where Magneto went. Storm follows that path and talks to the Dominion in the “Overspace.” She defies the Dominion and finds herself in a broken city of judgment.
Since the Krakoan age started, Storm has been in a weird place. From robbing Wakanda during the X of Swords event to adopting Arakko ways, I’ve always struggled to figure out her place in the new order. Due to the Civil War on Arakko, she has been absent in the main plotline of Fall of X. I knew that it would be dynamic whenever she returned to Earth. Watching her in Resurrection of Magneto #1 felt more philosophical than action-oriented. We get to see the humanity in her. Storm has nightmares and is comforted by a human in her bed. Storm questions her roles in her world. Storm contemplates who her friends are and all that is hidden behind the facade of her power. This, for some reason, is highly relatable. It is the most humanizing moment I’ve seen from the Fall of X run, except perhaps for Kamala Khan and Nightcrawler.
Despite that, this plotline is not easy to grasp. You can see Storm processing all this information, but the Dominion idea that has infiltrated this event is very complicated. Seeing Dominion appear here threw me out of the plotline a bit and started to confuse me. I was on board with the Waiting Room, Tarn, and Ashaka, especially since those ideas were already established in previous comics. But once we found Dominion and this broken city, I struggled to understand the significance of this plot decision. I will say everything looks very dynamic on the page, and I love the use of colors to accent Storm’s character design. Storm’s black outfit, skin tone, and white hair have always looked good on the page. And watching the full extent of her powers used is solid.
I really enjoyed Resurrection of Magneto #1. I love these characters, and I like Magneto’s character progression before his death. Part of me hopes that he will reject resurrection and decide for a peaceful transition to the afterlife. But I am excited to see whatever the Marvel creative teams plan for him. I give 4.5 out of 5 stars for Resurrection of Magneto #1.
