I have been a huge fan of the Blue Book series by James Tynion IV and Michael Avon Oeming since it debut on Substack. Now, as Blue Book: 1947 is prepared to arrive in print, we have a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the series.
Blue Book: 1947 is the next series in James Tynion IV (Something is Killing the Children, The Nice House on the Lake) and Michael Avon Oeming’s nonfiction series that explores “true weird” stories. Blue Book: 1947 follows Kenneth Arnold as he flew his Call-Air A-2 over the skies of the Pacific Northwest and caught sight of a blinding flash of silver light. What followed was a bizarre and difficult to explain encounter with several flying objects that would change the course of his life forever.
Here is Michael’s commentary on the pages:
Sometimes instead of scanning in my sketchbook pages, I’ll just take a photo of my “pencils” and import that into my iPad Pro to start working. I do a lot of cleaning up, moving around, and digital drawing to finish the pencils and start inking. I use Clip Studio.
Drawing 3-D glasses and classic sci-fi was lots of fun.
These are what my sketchbook layouts look like when I scan them in. Then I’ll finish the pencils digitally.
Blue Book: 1947 #1 arrives on February 7, 2024. The Final Order Cutoff is next week, so don’t sit on this.
