Previously in X-Men: Witness the tumultuous journey of Genesis and Apocalypse, two powerful beings who once ruled Okkara in harmony. However, everything changed when Genesis was influenced by the Annihilation helm, leading her to repel the Amenth forces and divide Okkara into Krakoa and Arakko. During the Tournament of Swords, they clashed, but Apocalypse managed to remove the Annihilation helm, which was then transformed into a staff by Saturnyne. As a gesture of goodwill, Apocalypse joined his wife on Amenth.
X-Men Before the Fall: The Heralds of Apocalypse #1 sheds light on the fate of Apocalypse, Genesis, and their Four Horsemen. The story begins with an impending battle between them. Along the way, we glimpse the peaceful era when they governed Okkara and the pivotal moment when Genesis succumbed to the power of the Helm of Annihilation. In the present, they engage in combat, ultimately resulting in Genesis emerging as the victor due to her superior fighting skills. Despite this, they engage in a philosophical conversation, pondering whether true peace is attainable for either of them. Although Apocalypse desires peace, he chooses to aid Genesis by opening a portal before embarking on his own path.
Thematically, X-Men Before the Fall: The Heralds of Apocalypse #1 excels, delving into complex themes. However, I found the inclusion of Orchis to be somewhat out of place, as it introduces a non-mutant element into the storyline. The compelling history between Genesis and Apocalypse, as well as their ongoing struggle to establish a new world order in Arakko and Krakoa, deserves more focus. With their immense power, I would expect them to be unfazed by Orchis and the earthly games they play. Nonetheless, this comic’s exploration of love, war, and peace is intriguing, and I look forward to future installments. The comic boasts solid artwork and dynamic character designs, leaving me optimistic about this upcoming mutant event.
The reappearance of Apocalypse alone elevates X-Men Before the Fall: The Heralds of Apocalypse #1 to a captivating read. This comic is an excellent pick for those intrigued by the intricate dynamics among Arakko, Krakoa, and their leaders. I give it 4 out of 5 stars! Brace yourself for an enthralling event as this issue sets the stage.
