Previously in Spider-Man India: Pavitr Prabhakar wields the incredible abilities of a spider, including enhanced speed, strength, and agility. Following the tragic death of his Uncle Bhim, Pavitr embraced the timeless mantra that with great power comes great responsibility, hence assuming the mantle of Spider-Man.
Spider-Man India #1 kicks off with Pavitr joining forces with Peter Parker and Miles Morales to confront the formidable Mysterio in the 616-universe. After a brief but intense battle, the trio convenes at a local restaurant to discuss their experiences before Pavitr returns to his own multiverse. Back in Mumbai, Pavitr focuses his efforts on aiding the city’s inhabitants but struggles with the overwhelming number of people in need. Mumbai’s population of 21 million presents a daunting challenge as he grapples with the realization that he cannot save everyone. Compounding the situation, a corporation known as Giricorps is resorting to bullying tactics to displace slum dwellers and make room for their ambitious new project.
During a lecture by Dr. Kumar, Pavitr is unexpectedly selected to visit the doctor’s laboratory. Dr. Kumar’s research explores reptilian brains and their potential integration with human capabilities. However, a mishap occurs when Kumar drugs Pavitr to use as a human test subject which triggers a massive explosion due to his inherent spider powers. The result? Dr. Kumar transforms into a lizard-like creature, inadvertently becoming his own experiment.
Spider-Man India #1 delves into the concept of seva, which I had to research to fully grasp. It appears to be akin to altruism, with Hindu and yoga influences. This inclusion intrigued me since it added a distinctive cultural element to the story. While the overall plot may feel familiar, as we’ve encountered numerous origin stories featuring different iterations of Spider-Man, Pavitr’s cultural background serves as the main selling point. As someone of Chinese multiracial heritage, I appreciate the increased representation and found myself resonating with Nikesh’s commentary in the back of the book.
The artwork in Spider-Man India #1 is solid, showcasing consistent line work and a well-executed artistic design throughout. Although I didn’t come across a specific page that stood out and grabbed my attention, I cannot deny the overall quality and attention to detail evident within the pages.
Spider-Man India #1 has undeniably captured my interest. As someone unfamiliar with the character until recently, I am fully invested in discovering how this iteration of Spider-Man will introduce fresh elements to the narrative. I eagerly anticipate witnessing the development of this story. That said, I give Spider-Man India #1 a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

Spider-Man India #1 kicked off the series with a compelling introduction to the story. It left me impressed and engaged. However, moving forward, I hope the creators maintain the character's distinctiveness and avoid relying too heavily on predictable choices.
