X-MEN: BEFORE THE FALL – MUTANT FIRST STRIKE #1

    Writer: Steve Orlando
    Artist: Valentina Pinti
    Colorist: Frank William
    Letterer: Travis Lanham
    Editor: Jordan D. White
    Publisher: Marvel Comics
    Cover Price: $4.99
    Release Date: June 7th, 2023

Previously in X-Men: The Mutants have established Krakoa as a safe haven and a symbol of unity among mutantkind. However, their power and influence have attracted enemies, including Orchis. Orchis launches an offensive against Krakoa, employing anti-mutant propaganda and sowing discord. Nevertheless, the mutants refuse to turn their backs on those in need.

    A CALL FOR ACTION

In X-Men: Before the Fall – Mutant First Strike #1, a devastating attack on Milford, New Hampshire, puts mutants in the crosshairs as the sole culprits. In response, the Quiet Council tasks Bishop with leading a team to investigate and provide aid. Mutants like Penance and Tempo work to uncover the cause of the explosion, while others assist in rescuing and supporting the injured. However, Orchis dispatches the Watchdogs to cause chaos and harass the mutants, only to find themselves outmatched by Cyclops, Angel, and Monet. Despite a lack of evidence, Jean Grey’s telepathic abilities reveal that the Watchdogs firmly believe the attack resulted from mutant involvement.

Bishop’s team goes beyond the call of duty to help rebuild the town. They not only heal the wounded and repair buildings but also make significant improvements to the area, taking care of even the most minor tasks, such as cooking. Eventually, they expose Orchis as the true orchestrator of the attack. However, Orchis may have achieved their desired media attention.

    A MOMENT OF SELFLESSNESS

Several standout scenes in X-Men: Before the Fall #1 resonate with readers. It’s gratifying to see mutants like Greycrow cooking for the greater good and witnessing Jean Grey’s ability to rebuild houses and improve homes. The inclusion of newer mutants like Escapade adds a unique diversity while showcasing their willingness to assist ordinary people. These moments, more than the actual action, leave a lasting impact.

However, ignoring the foreshadowing of another significant change for mutants is impossible. I believe a battle between Krakoa and Orchis looms, likely resulting in considerable collateral damage. We may witness a return to the familiar dynamic of mutant schools and the conflict between the X-Men and the Brotherhood. While part of me longs for that return to roots, I must admit that the Krakoa storylines have reignited my passion for comics. The coming year will reveal the path they choose.

Furthermore, the artwork in this issue is exceptionally strong. Despite introducing numerous characters in vibrant and unfamiliar (to me) color schemes, the illustrations allow for easy recognition. The artistic team deserves commendation for their work.

    BOTTOM LINE: A WELL-CRAFTED STORY

X-Men: Before the Fall #1 offers an engaging read. While the writing and art may not have left me astounded, each page feels meticulously crafted and consistent. Considering this, I rate this comic 4.5 out of 5 stars and eagerly anticipate future developments in the X-Men titles.
