Amazon Studios The Rings of Power is here. We want all Spoilerites to have the best viewing experience possible and have the widest knowledge base about the Second Age of Middle-Earth. This is a weekly Let’s Get Nerdy article series highlighting a different piece of Tolkien I think you need to know about!
Let’s end this month’s Let’s Get Nerdy! series out with another casting rumour – shall we? Our favourite Twitter account, Fellowship of Fans has yet another casting rumour for Rings of Power audience to stew over until next year when the second season of the show returns to our screens.
Actor Nicholas Woodeson (Skyfall, Paddington 2), is at the center of this latest Let’s Get Nerdy! exploration:

You can see from the above Tweet the character Woodeson is rumoured to be playing is called “Diarmid”. The briefest of searches will turn up nothing from the Tolkien canon surrounding a character named “Diarmid”. This could be one of two things, in my humble opinion. First, the character name could be a codename. The Rings of Power has used fake character names before – this is the heart of my theory behind who the “Viran” is! There’s also the chance Diarmid, like Bronwyn/Theo/Arondir, is an original character who we won’t know much about before we meet him in season 2.
There is a little bit more to be gleaned from “Diarmid”’s character description. Multiple outlets are using the phrase:
Pelargir character
… to describe Diarmid.
Pelargir is a name that caught my eye immediately because – IT’S. IN. GONDOR!
The Kingdom of Gondor should be familiar to you if you’ve read or seen The Lord of the Rings. It is even namechecked by Aragorn in the pages of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King:
“At Pelargir the Heir of Isildur will have need of you.”
Pelargir is the harbour of Gondor. It is the Gondorian doorway to the sea from which they accept visitors and do much trade. Based right on the banks of the River Anduin, Pelargir is a key geographical feature in the Kingdom of Gondor.
As with many names Pelargir has an Elvish root – although this on from the Sindarin dialect – meaning “Garth of Royal Ships”. The initially city was founded in The Second Age of Middle-Earth – when we know the events of The Rings of Power to be set – in the year 2350. This means some version of the harbour canonically exists when the show takes place!
What is especially notable about Aragorn’s time in Pelargir? This is where he summons the Army of the Dead. So, I believe, Nicholas Woodeson is playing the King who we will see become a ghost during the events of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King! How’s THAT for a prediction?
