ON THE RUN
Kroma #2 starts up right where the first issue ends, with Kroma’s liberator being murdered and her being face-to-face with those who want to put her back in a cell. She manages to escape the city and finds herself in the wilderness. She’s eventually confronted by a group sent to capture her, but a bird then descends and rescues her. It’s then revealed that it’s actually an old man in a bird disguise. He leads her back to his home, encountering dangers along the way. Also during their travels, the elderly man begins to explain to Kroma the nature of the world they live in and a brief lesson on their history. Once at the old man’s house, Kroma finally has time to start reading through her fallen friend’s journal.
A UNIQUE WORLD FILLED WITH COMPLEX CHARACTERS
While the first issue did a lot to set up the groundwork for this universe and to introduce the main characters, it’s here in Kroma #2 where things really start to really expand. In particular, there’s a really nice dive into some of the mechanics of how things work for example, why color is so important to the world and why humans did away with it. The explanations to these questions are satisfying, while not getting rid of some of the mystique that this universe still has. As for the characters, they also get a chance to show their depth here. Kroma immediately finds herself combating guilt and struggling with the truth. Also, the villains get some depth. The main antagonist has a nice moment of subtle fragility and his right-hand man also shows signs of having deeper motivations beyond simple bloodlust. Once again though, the issue ends on a pretty intense cliffhanger. Unfortunately, because the first issue also had a very visceral ending, the one here doesn’t have the same punch and gets pretty close to feeling cheap.
MORE BEAUTIFUL WITH EVERY PANEL
Kroma #2 features a wonderful escalation in terms of its visuals. While the previous issue was very muted in its colors, here they’re allowed to shine brightly. The way that the various hues are shown with such intensity really helps the reader get into the shoes of Kroma who also is seeing these types of colors for the very first time. There’s really nothing to complain about with the art, it’s simply stunning.
BOTTOM LINE: NOT LOSING ANY STEAM
Kroma #2 doesn’t ease up at all in terms of quality in storytelling and visuals. It takes all the foundation set up in the first issue and runs wild with it to not only reveal some secrets of this world but expands the scope of the world as well. 4.5 out of 5 stars
