Previously in Immortal X-Men: The Quiet Council has led the mutant nation to prosperity, but every member has their own goals. Recently, the immortality secret has been revealed to the world. Shaw is scheming, while Destiny has numerous visions. However, Mister Sinister is a supervillain and is about to enact a new plan.
THE RESURRECTION OF MISTER SINISTER
Immortal X-Men #9 uses Kate Pryde from the point of view character. She makes comments about the latest Council meeting until Mister Sinister walks in. Destiny warns that Mister Sinister plans to kill Hope, and Exodus retaliates immediately. What happens now is a montage of Mister Sinister using his clones to try and kill the council, specifically Hope, and ultimately failing. At least until his tenth time, he set up a psychic trap that gave him enough time to kill Hope and escape. Kate Pryde, visibly upset, leads a team to find Mister Sinister. At the same time, some of the council looks for a way to resurrect without Hope.
THE END OF IMMORTALITY?
Is this the issue where we get rid of mutant resurrection? With the death of Hope in Immortal X-Men #9, one of the main components of resurrection is gone. Immortal X-Men has explored the meaning of the resurrection in the larger zeitgeist of the Marvel world. I find myself very surprised if this series ends with X-Men giving up their immortality. But at the same time, I find myself a little fatigued by how many leadership changes there have been in the past year, especially when considering the politics of the X-Men Red series.
The tone of this book took a change. There wasn’t a massive introspection that each issue of this series had before. It read more like a montage of action sequences. While this was entertaining, I lost a little bit of interest while reading this issue. At least the art has continually been engaging. Good work overall by the creative team.
BOTTOM LINE: IT FELT LIKE A MIDDLE ISSUE
I have always treated the Immortal X-Men series as individual issues about specific people. The plot is usually just a tool to explore the characters more. Immortal X-Men #9 was the first issue where I didn’t really learn much about the characters, but rather it felt like it was setting up the plot lines in the rest of the series. With that in mind, Immortal X-Men #9 is a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Immortal X-Men #9 sets up the next issue but doesn't give Kate Pryde the attention I was expecting based on previous issues.
