Happy February, Spoilerites! Many collaborators here at Major Spoilers have done time in the trenches of comic book retail. February is very famously the home of Valentine’s Day – a mere two weeks away if you are reading this the day it’s posted! In celebration of Valentine’s Day – and to save you the grief of browsing for gifts! – we have assembled a Gift Guide for Him.
(and a Gift Guide for Her!)
Full of suggestions for the comic book-loving person in your life. Gender is a construct and Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be about romantic love, so whoever you are buying for, we want to help you find gifts.

Saga Volume 1
Written by Brain K. Vaughn
Art by: Fiona Staples
This book comes with the added bonus of a ton of volumes that come after for your love to dive into after you gift them the first installment. AND Saga recently came back into publication, so it’s very on-trend as a gift to give this year. Saga is “Romeo & Juliet but in space.” It’s a contemporary classic, emperor of indie comic books, and one of the most beautiful gifts you could offer.

Harlequin Valentine
Written by Neil Gaiman
Art by John Bolton
For the The Suicide Squad and Harley Quinn: the Animated Series fan in your life, Harlequin Valentine is a beautiful, invented examination of how and why Harley Quinn loves the way she does. Which is to say: red flags. This story is set during Valentine’s Day and, to this day, remains one of the most genuinely artistic expressions of the character. It will take all the things a contemporary Harley fans has and turn it on their head.

Sex Criminals Volume 1
Written by Matt Fraction
Art by Chip Zdarsky
For mature readers only, Sex Criminals dares to ask: what if every time a couple climaxed their stopped time? Ultimately, it’s an exploration of whether the nature of human beings is good or evil, wrapped up in a charming premise. Zdarsky brings, frankly, adorable, art to this complex concept with panel after panel that will charm your Valentine and have them leaning over to share with you page, after page, after page.

Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows
Written by Dan Slott
Art by Andy Kubert
There are two superheroes I absolutely had to recommend in this Valentine’s Day Gift Guide and the Marvel Comics must-have is: Spider-Man. Renew Your Vows is a standalone graphic novel not steeped in the ongoing continuity of the time. It’s set in a new universe where Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson are married adults with a daughter – A DAUGHTER WHO WEARS A DAREDEVIL ONESIE!!!! Is there anything else you need to know? It takes everything you know and love about the iconic Spider-Man romance and dares to ask: what if they were good at being together?

Batman: The Long Halloween
Written by Jeph Loeb
Art by Tim Sale
Lists such as this would be remiss if they did not include a Batman story. Long Hallowe’en has enjoyed multiple adaptations including two animated movies and as inspiration for the upcoming The Batman live-action adaptation, so this gift serves the double purpose of being a great story and educational. The Long Hallowe’en features Batman chasing a villain across a year’s worth of holidays – including Valentine’s Day! There’s a Valentine’s issue focusing on the romantic relationship between Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle. This graphic novel fires on all cylinders as a Valentine’s Day Gift.
We would love to read your additional recommendations in the comments section of this post. Happy Valentine’s Day, Spoilerites!
