Previously in X-Men: Nightcrawler has been tasked to create a new religion to help unify mutantkind. As Kurt processed this, he realized that people were making a game out of dying and being resurrected. With the help of Legion, Nightcrawler learned that Onslaught had invaded the minds of Krakoa and was using the resurrection process to increase in power. With the mutants of Krakoa planning a party that ends in death, Onslaught will become unstoppable.
THE PARTY OF MURDER
X-Men: Onslaught Revelation #1 begins with Nightcrawler teleporting Pixie into Legion’s mind and using it as a battleground to fight Onslaught. With Pixie free, she can use her soul dagger to free people from Onslaught’s control. Meanwhile, Nightcrawler tells Fabian Cortez that he killed Lost’s parents and then begins to preach to them both. Using an analogy involving a fish, a shark, and a whale, he tries to give Fabian a reason for unity. Fabian relents, puts away his pride, and allows himself to be vulnerable. With this he creates a spark, which transfers from Fabian to Lost.
Meanwhile, Pixie is doing his best to free as many people as possible and even managing to free Magneto from Onslaught’s grasp. Meanwhile, Charlex Xavier is deleting the copies of mutants. If the party goes through with mutants killing each other, resurrection will be impossible. Pixie and Magneto leads the mutants to Legion’s mind. (with the help from Doctor Nemesis and Dazzler) But Onslaught takes over Charles Xavier’s body when it is revealed that Lost was the catalyst for Onslaught’s arrival. With Onslaught revealing himself, Nightcrawler is able to defeat him.
Months later, Fabian Cortez and Lost are preaching Nightcrawler’s new way of life called “the Spark” and they use Legion’s mind to create a safe place to handle trauma. They also give themselves a new name, the Legionnaires.
FINDING MEANING
There is a lot of good stuff to unpack in X-Men: Onslaught Revelation #1 but I think I want to focus on Fabian Cortez. Fabian has always been an overconfident, selfish guy who wants to be the center of attention, but he can’t be when his power is to amplify others. This led to a self-destructive path that led to a lot of death and pain. When he finally began to admit his emotions, he became the hero of the story. While Nightcrawler is still the protagonist of this story, the focus on secondary characters like Fabian is incredibly well done. You see similar engaging development with characters like Doctor Nemesis, Lost, and Pixie as well.
I enjoyed that Onslaught was beaten through a sense of unity and belief instead of through a combat. It showed a growth of Nightcrawler has he dealt with his own crisis of faith and the creation of a religion. Which is such an interesting comparison to Onslaught’s plan, which was to influence mutants to kill each other.
BOTTOM LINE: SOLID WORK
I think the Way of X series and X-Men: Onslaught Revelation #1 was written for someone with my interests. This was exactly my cup of tea, and I am thrilled with how it ended. I now want to learn more. I want to see how this thing goes, what happened to Charles Xavier, and what kind of movement will this be like in Krakoa. This is a 5 out of 5 from me. Great issue.
