IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
BITTER ROOT #11
Writer: Chuck Brown and David F. Walker
Artist: Sanford Greene
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: 2020 Ringo Award-winning artist SANFORD GREENE and his co-creators/co-writers DAVID F. WALKER and CHUCK BROWN return in BITTER ROOT: LEGACY, the third arc of the Eisner and Ringo Award-winning series! As Earth is overrun by hideous creatures fueled by racism, a new evil force known as the Tree of Hate has literally taken root. The Sangerye family of monster hunters once again finds themselves divided, and fighting each other, as they confront their most dangerous threat ever. Family dysfunction meets steampunk during the Harlem Renaissance, and life on Earth will never be the same in BITTER ROOT: LEGACY!
INGRID: The Sangeryes are back! This book is so terrific, and as the start of a new arc, this is an excellent jumping on point. The action is thrilling and the character development is superb. And the steampunk vibe is incredibly fun.
DRYAD #9
Writer: Kurtis J. Wiebe
Artist: Justin Barcelo
Publisher: Oni Press Inc.
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Magic must breathe, and the natural world -the lungs of magic -has been destroyed and replaced with metal and false light. The Sowers of Dryad believe civilization must be destroyed in order to make way for nature, and the Glass family finds themselves right at the center of conflict between the new and old world.
CHRISTOPHER: I initially thought this series was about magic verses technology. However, the book has added the scene of nature verses civilization. I’m enthused to see how they continue to build upon that theme.
HAHA #3
Writer: W. Maxwell Prince
Artist: Zoe Thorogood
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Our less-funny-than-the-title-suggests clown anthology continues with a silent mime story illustrated by legendary cartoonist ROGER LANGRIDGE.
MATTHEW: I haven’t been disappointed by this book yet, even if it’s a very particular kind of humor. If you like any of the silly things I say on our various shows or here at Major Spoilers, you should check it out. Even if you don’t I think it’s worth your time.
LADY BALTIMORE: THE WITCH QUEENS #1 (OF 5)
Writer: Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden
Artist: Bridgit Connell
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Once she was Sofia Valk, living in a village overrun by evil. In time she became Lord Baltimore’s most trusted ally. Now, more than a decade after his death, Europe has erupted with the early battles of World War 2 and dark forces are rising again. With witches, vampires, and Nazis on the march, Sofia must embrace the title of Lady Baltimore! But can she fight monsters without becoming a monster herself? Horror genius writing team Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden reunite, with stellar art by Bridgit Connell and colors by Michelle Madsen as they return readers to the world of Baltimore.
CHRISTOPHER: I’ve been following the title over the past few years and I am excited to see Sofia become a protagonist.
STEPHEN: So glad to see this series return. Definitely on my must read list this week.
STRAY DOGS #2
Writer: Tony Fleecs
Artist: Trish Forstner
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Something doesn’t smell right! None of the dogs know what happens behind that door at the end of the hallway. All they know is there’s a punishment for sniffing around it. What secrets are hidden in the Master’s Forbidden Room? “Stray Dogs is one of the best ideas I’ve ever heard, made all the better by flawless execution and a mastery of tone. My new favorite book.”
—KYLE HIGGINS (RADIANT BLACK, Nightwing, Power Rangers)
INGRID: It’s all the suspense you would expect in a story about a possible serial killer, but with the added twist that the suspect is also a dog rescuer. Or is he a dognaper? The animation-like artwork is charming and gives a feel of incongruity that raises the horror factor.
TAARNA, THE LAST TARAAKIAN #4
Writer: Stephanie Phillips
Artist: Christian Rosado
Publisher: Heavy Metal Publications
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Taarna’s battles against the servants of Kako, the embodiment of multiversal chaos, are pushing her to the breaking point as she fights to protect her new ally, the mysterious girl named Shaan. This is the story of a millennia-old battle between godlike beings, with all sentient life caught in their path.
MATTHEW: I’m not sure if this is a reimagining of the events of ‘Heavy Metal’ the movie or something building on that mythos, but with art this good and a story this engaging, I don’t care.
TEEN TITANS ACADEMY #1
Writer: Tim Sheridan
Artist: Rafa Sandoval
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Welcome to Teen Titans Academy! Packed with both new, super-powered teens and numerous dark secrets, Teen Titans Academy’s student body includes Shazam; a new Australian speedster; a trio of Goth(am) teen expatriates obsessed with Batman—and one member of this first class will become the deadly Red X. Original New Teen Titans including Nightwing, Starfire, Raven, Cyborg, and Beast Boy take on the role of teachers and mentors for superpowered teens. Their goal: to shape the next generation of heroes.
MATTHEW: I really enjoyed the last arc of Teen Titans, and I’m interested in seeing the original Titans trying teacher roles again. They did it in the ‘90s with some interesting results.
STEPHEN: Marvel’s version was fun, so let’s see what DC Comics can bring to the table with… IS THAT RED X!? DAMN, GIMME THIS BOOK RIGHT NOW!
ROBOT OVERLORD: Spring has sprung. Life is blooming.
