BLACK COTTON #1 (OF 6)
Writer: Patrick Foreman and Brian Hawkins
Artist: Marco Perugini
Publisher: Scout Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Set in an alternate reality where the social order of “white” and “black” is reversed, an elitist family, the Cottons, are rocked by a tragic shooting that begins to unravel long standing family secrets that could not only destroy the family but also divide the fragile social climate of the world.
CHRISTOPHER: I like it when my literature and media challenges what I know and think. This story is sure to be thought-provoking.
FUTURE STATE: CATWOMAN #2
Writer: Ram V
Artist: Otto Schmidt
Publisher: DC
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Catwoman has clawed her way through half of the Magistrate’s bullet train, but her fight has only just begun! Now, with Onomatopoeia in tow, Selina makes her way toward the car carrying a ghost of her past, and Gotham’s as well. It’s Bruce Wayne…but is it really him? And with Talia al Ghul on board as well, will this be a long-awaited reunion between the Bat and the Cat, or will Selina’s mission to rescue the Magistrate’s prisoners go off the rails?
INGRID: An audacious train heist in a dystopian near future is enough to win me over. But Selina doesn’t yet realize that Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul are wild cards in the mix! It sounds exciting and I can’t wait to read it!
HAHA #2
Writer: W. Maxwell Prince
Artist: Zoe Thorogood
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “RUDOLPH ON THE ROAD TO FUNVILLE”-Every boy and girl needs a momma, like a puppy needs a bowl. The funny-sad clown series for a funny-sad clown world continues with a mother-daughter road trip illustrated by ZOE THOROGOOD (The Impending Blindness of Billie Scott).
MATTHEW: The first issue of this series was quite good, earning an uncommon 5 out of 5 stars from me, so I’m absolutely wanting to see where this anthology goes from here. Given the quality and creativity of ‘Ice Cream Man’, Prince’s other book, there’s tons of potential for uncomfortable quality comics here.
IRON MAN #6
Writer: Christopher Cantwell
Artist: CAFU
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: After receiving a near-fatal injury from Korvac, Iron Man lands in emergency triage with his life on the line. Halcyon and Misty Knight work quickly to lock Tony in his armor and stanch his injuries…but now he can’t take it off or else he’ll die. With pieces of metal literally holding his body together, Tony regroups with his allies, all while trying not to give into his rage over being bested by Korvac. With Hellcat on the psychological ropes and his other hero compatriots recuperating from their own near-death experiences, can Tony muster what he needs in order to chase Korvac out into space and stop the mad demigod’s quest for ultimate power?
MATTHEW: This Iron Man run has examined Tony Stark’s flaws and failings in a way that other recent stories haven’t, and it’s made for great reading, with excellent art.
SABRINA: SOMETHING WICKED #5
Writer: Kelly Thompson
Artist: Veronica Fish and Andy Fish
Publisher: Archie Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The thrilling conclusion of Sabrina: Something Wicked is here, and it’s going to put our magical teen heroine face-to-face in a battle against someone unexpected—will everything Sabrina’s learned about magic help her through this ordeal?
INGRID: I love Sabrina and this arc has been a good one for a current take on everyone’s favorite teenage witch. She may not realize how powerful she is, but she is plucky. But has she bitten off more than she can chew?
