The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
BARBALIEN: RED PLANET #3
Writer: Tate Brombal and Jeff Lemire
Artist: Gabriel Hernandez Walta
Publisher: Dark Horse
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Barbalien continues to flee the Martian bounty hunter Boa Boaz—and continues to develop a relationship with a young activist under an assumed identity. But past and present collide when Boa begins targeting people in Barbalien’s life.
INGRID: Barbalien’s origin story is set in the midst of the AIDS crisis. Not only is Mark Markz coming to grip with his sexuality; he has to hide it. And he has to hide his identity as Barbalien because he is also being hunted by one of his own people as a traitor to them. It’s a terrific exploration in what it means to be true to yourself when you aren’t allowed to simply be yourself.
IRON FIST HEART OF THE DRAGON #1
Writer: Larry Hama
Artist: Dave Wachter
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Someone is killing the ancient dragons that power the HEAVENLY CITIES, and only IRON FIST and the DEADLY WEAPONS can stop them…if they can discover who they are in time! Zombie armies, mystical portals, dragon hearts, some of the Marvel Universe’s deadliest fighters all converge in one action-packed extravaganza, and the fate of all worlds hangs in the balance! LARRY HAMA and DAVID WACHTER are building a story that hits as hard as the Iron Fist itself!
MATTHEW: You had me at “Larry Hama.”
STEPHEN: Oh, boy! Larry Hama taking on Iron Fist!? I’m in! Also, a new Iron Fist series! Will it be better than the Netflix series? Man… I hope so.
KILLADELPHIA #12
Writer: Rodney Barnes
Artist: Jason Shawn Alexander
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “BURN BABY BURN,” Conclusion
The smash-hit series from RODNEY BARNES, the writer behind such hit shows as Marvel’s Runaways and STARZ’s American Gods, and JASON SHAWN ALEXANDER, the artist who redefined SPAWN, reaches its shocking second-arc conclusion!
Jupiter and Abigail have decimated the city of brotherly love, and as their reign of terror reaches its climax, things look bleak for our heroes. If Philadelphia stands any chance of survival, James Sangster Sr. and son will have to reach out to the one person they’d never ally themselves with, or else no one will survive the night. But will that be enough to save them, or will the casualties continue?
Also includes part six of the horrifying werewolf back-up story “ELYSIUM GARDENS”!
INGRID: Killadelphia is violent, sexy, and smart. Under the leadership of Abigail, the vampire attacks in Philadelphia are much more focused, destructive, and terrifying. At the same time, the vampires have become much more complex and nuanced. This is one of the best horror books out there.
LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #12
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Ryan Sook, Wade Von Grawbadger
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The battle is on! This powerhouse issue features the Legion confronting the greatest challenge of any era! With New Krypton on the verge of destruction at the hands of one of Jon Kent’s deadliest foes, the young hero may have to make the ultimate sacrifice to save his friends, his family, and his heritage—but it could lead to the start of a monumental new chapter in the future of the DC Universe! Long live the Legion!
MATTHEW: I’m still conflicted about this new Legion, but there have been some moments that I really enjoyed in it. If only Bendis could get more of the story on the page! Either way, Matter-Eater Lad’s on the cover, so I’m in.
RORSCHACH #4
Writer: Tom King
Artist: Jorge Fornes
Publisher: DC Comics/Black Label
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: At last, it’s time for Laura’s story. The detective following Rorschach’s trail turns his eyes toward the vigilante’s female companion. Who is behind that domino mask, and what led her to team up with an old comic book creator to try to assassinate a controversial presidential candidate? These are the threads the detective must unravel—and they lead him to a circus side show and the strong man she once convinced to kill for her.
MATTHEW: I haven’t been excited about this book, but issue #3 and the solicitation copy here have drawn me into the central mystery. Here’s hoping that the solicit actually represents what’s IN the book.
ROBOT OVERLORD: Find a peaceful place where you can make plans for the future.
