IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
FOLKLORDS #5 (OF 5)
Writer; Matt Kindt
Artist: Matt Smith
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Ansel and his motley crew converge on the Library of Banned Books, and finally come face to face with a Folklord-but are any of them ready for this encounter, and what it will mean for their entire world?
CHRISTOPHER: This has been an interesting miniseries that takes a lot of risks. I hope the finale continues to challenge the comfort-zone of the genre and entertainment medium.
STEPHEN: Not a horrible issue, and it does wrap up the events that we’ve been reading these last couple of months. If you bought the first four, you should go ahead get this one as well.
GIANT SIZE X-MEN #1 NIGHTCRAWLER
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Alan Davis
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: HICKMAN AND DAVIS HAUNT THE XAVIER SCHOOL!
Superstar writer Jonathan Hickman teams with legendary artist Alan Davis (X-MEN, EXCALIBUR, AVENGERS) for an eerie tale of adventure! When the X-Men lose contact with the Greymalkin Habitat, it falls to Nightcrawler to lead a mission into the unknown!
CHRISTOPHER: Nightcrawler is one of my favorite X-men because it plays on the trope of racism and oppression that many X-men books are about. So any book that has Nightcrawler as the title character is an immediate pick up from me.
HIDDEN SOCIETY #2 (OF 4)
Writer: Rafael Scavone
Artist: Rafael Albuquerque
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A new series from Rafael Albuquerque and Rafael Scavone, the team behind Neil Gaiman’s A Study in Emerald!
After assembling the last stand between humanity and a primeval world-killing serpent god, Ulloo the wizard leads the heroes of the Hidden Society to Europe where they must stop a group of nihilist warlocks from waking the serpent beast from the bowels of the earth.
CHRISTOPHER: The cast of characters are really quite diverse and fascinating. I’m hoping the second book strengthens the plothook while still giving the protagonists their spotlight.
THE IMMORTAL HULK #33
Writer: Al Ewing
Artist: Joe Bennett
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $5.99
SOLICITATION: Something is wrong. Something is wrong. Something is wrong.
MATTHEW: It’s the 750th issue of the Hulk’s various comics, and this creative team has made a fluffy joke villain into the most terrifying thing in recent memory. It’s good, y’all….
KILLADELPHIA #5
Writer: Rodney Barnes
Artist: Jason Shawn Alexander
Publisher: Image Comics, Inc.
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “SINS OF THE FATHER,” Part Five
As Philadelphia burns around him, newborn vampire and former detective James Sangster Sr. must fight back his blood-thirst long enough to save his city and his son. But is he willing to make a deal with another devil to stop lead vampire John Adams and his hell hounds?
INGRID: This is a brilliant book. Deeply rooted in history yet so original, this is a tense tale of violence and manipulation, of warped good intentions, and of the very meaning of freedom. Top it off with gritty, stylish art, and it adds up to a really cool experience.
LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #5
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Ryan Sook/Travis Moore
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: With the secret of Jon Kent revealed, the Legion of Super-Heroes is united to save New Earth from those who would destroy it. Will Aquaman’s lost trident be the key to New Earth’s demise? Plus, Mon-El comes clean about his connection to Jon, and Cosmic Boy and Ferro Lad find out they both have a crush on the same Legionnaire.
MATTHEW: There’s some things that annoy me and a few unanswered questions, but I’m still in the running with the new future of the DCU. I really want to see more of the various team members in action, even if I want the plot to start MOVING already…
ONCE & FUTURE #7
Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Dan Mora
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Although Bridgette and Duncan were able to escape the Otherworld, their adventure is only just beginning! As the chaos of Arthur’s return reaches London, an artifact at the British Museum is stolen. But is it Arthur who’s interested in the relic… or someone, or something, new?
INGRID: They’re back! Duncan and Bridgette did not part on the best of terms, but Duncan has embraced his responsibility as a hero. He is so much more than a mundane historian now. I am thrilled to see what sort of adventure is in store for them now. I can’t wait!
SEX CRIMINALS #28
Writer: Matt Fraction
Artist: Chip Zdarsky
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: “THE END,” Part Three-The bad guy comes into rack focus. I didn’t mean anything dirty by that, I mean, like, we learn a lot about him on the eve of the Big Job. That sounds dirty too. It’s not. I mean, not really.
MATTHEW: I love this book, and (if you’re an adult with a sense of humor), I hope you will, too.
ROBOT OVERLORD: THE SMART THING TO DO IS TO BEGIN TRUSTING YOUR INTUITIONS.
