IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
ACTION COMICS #1016
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Szymon Kudranski
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Clark Kent, defender of the truth! The Daily Planet is under siege as the streets of Metropolis prepare for a gang war! The invisible mafia is invisible no more-and the streets of Metropolis will burn if the truth does not get out. All this, and another dive into the secrets of DC’s newest teen sensation… Naomi!
STEPHEN: There is a lot of great dialogue in this issue, as I discussed on this week’s Major Spoilers Podcast, and I think that makes the issue that much more charming. I continue to be a fan of the hidden gangs of Metropolis storyline, as well as The Red Cloud, and the return of Lex Luthor, it is the little interactions between Naomi, her mother, Batman and Superman that sell the issue for me.
AMAZING MARY JANE #1
Writer: Leah Williams
Artist: Carlos E. Gomez
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: One lucky lady just hit the jackpot with her own series – THE AMAZING MARY JANE #1 by writer Leah Williams and artist Carlos Gomez will bow this October, putting the spotlight on the love of Peter Parker’s life! But if Spider-history has taught us anything, such a position is rarely a good one and usually spells trouble! In a story spinning from the pages of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #25, Mary Jane Watson just got her big shot – but at what cost? And can she really trust anyone as she pursues her Hollywood dreams?
Mary Jane is no stranger to drama, so you can be sure that THE AMAZING MARY JANE will be offering up action, glamor, grit, and even a little sass in this new ongoing series, coming in October!
STEPHEN: I see a lot of people talking about this, and even though I’m not the biggest fan of Mary Jane, I really have high hopes for this book. It looks good, and as an ongoing series, this could be our chance to get in on the ground floor of Marvel’s next big thing.
DIAL H FOR HERO #8
Writer: Sam Humphries
Artist: Paulina Ganucheau and Joe Quinones
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Summer and Miguel discover a new, dark power of the H-Dial-a power as old as the DC Universe itself! With the future of the entire Multiverse at stake, our heroes must venture once again into the Heroverse and find the Operator before it’s too late!
INGRID: More new heroes than you can shake a stick at – and more H-Dials than we knew existed before! Summer and Miguel try their best to get things back to normal in the multiverse, and it is truly entertaining.
HELLBOY AND THE BPRD SATURN RETURNS #3

Agent Kinsley and the local authorities must race to stop the bloodthirsty body-snatcher without Hellboy, who has been urgently pulled in another direction.
STEPHEN: You know what they say – any week that has the release of a Hellboy comic is a good week. This week is shaping up to be a great one with the final installment of this mini-series from Dark Horse Comics.
SERA AND THE ROYAL STARS #4
Writer: Jon Tsuei
Artist: Audrey Mok
Publisher: Vault Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Sera travels the depths of the Underworld with no means of escape. Will the Council of Gods offer a way out or will the Royal Stars be forced to enact a dangerous plan before the stars of Draco seal their fate?
CHRISTOPHER: This story has a strong female protagonist, an interesting interpretation of mythology, and has been a delight to read. I always wonder what the next issue will bring.
INGRID: Sera is a princess whose mother disappeared while on a quest. Sera is fated to take up the quest herself while her family’s kingdom is at risk from both her uncle and from drought. Along the way, she finds the Royal Stars – personifications of stars – and with them, she now must find her way out of the land of the dead. A sweeping story with gorgeous art, you don’t want to miss this one!
