It’s a spot held by Joan Rivers, by Whoopi Goldberg and even by Martin Mull, all of whom can be pretty funny. But the real king of the center square on Hollywood Squares was Paul Lynde, sometime cartoon rat and beloved witch uncle, whose off-color humor always felt perfectly off-the-cuff and hilarious. (Rumors that the show was scripted abound, but I prefer to live in a dream world where people are just that spontaneously funny… Gives me hope, y’know?) His shadow is a long one and his wingtips shoes would be incredibly hard to fill in any universe, leading us to today’s camp query…
